The Director of Payroll is responsible for overseeing the activities of the Payroll team, providing strategic leadership and delivery of continuous improvement tools and solution techniques related to payroll processes. The leader will oversee all payroll functions including payroll processing, payroll process and technology improvement, payroll tax reporting and filing to ensure compliance with all state and federal laws and company policies. This position serves as a functional leader for payroll with regards to people system updates, projects and timekeeping system.

What you will do:

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to processes, procedures, and initiatives.  Review and analyze current payroll processes, recommend, and implement changes leading to best-practice solutions.

  • Recommend and implement system enhancements and process efficiencies.

  • Manage the overall payroll functions including payroll processing, payroll taxes and tax reporting, acquisitions, reviewing and revising policies and procedures, as well as internal controls, system review and upgrades.

  • Coach and develop the payroll team and supports payroll associates in daily, weekly, and monthly responsibilities including training and development planning.

  • Expert regarding payroll concepts, regulatory changes and tax laws, including proactively monitoring and driving issues to quick resolution (payroll, garnishments, taxes, time & attendance issues, etc.).

  • Provide solutions and recommendations to mitigate the company's risk and conform with legal obligations to avoid fines, penalties and non-compliance issues.

  • Manages vendor relationships and acts as primary point of contact for questions, concerns, and solutions.

  • Collaborate cross functionally with key stakeholders to meet associate and company expectations of payroll service delivery. Act as key partner for internal and external payroll related audits including legal matters.

  • Oversee the execution of payroll special events/activities (I.E. year end, escheat processing, special payments, etc.).

What you will need

  • 7+ years of multi-state payroll experience required.

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred.

  • Leadership experience required

  • Project Management experience required

  • End to end payroll experience required

  • Strong knowledge of payroll software, HCM and timekeeping software (preferably ADP Vantage, Kronos and Workday).

  • Ability to lead through change

  • Ability to work collaboratively with all levels and influence key stakeholders

  • Ability to translate a vision to strategy and set clear deliverable expectations

  • Experience driving continuous improvement initiatives and root cause analysis

  • Strong ability to coach, develop and inspire a team
