Summary
 

Primarily responsible for assisting attorneys on various legal activities by gathering information, summarizing issues, and assisting in resolution, handling and responding to correspondence, drafting routine documents, conducting factual and legal research, and functioning as a liaison with internal clients and outside counsel as needed.


Description
 

•Analyzes complaint/legal issues and determines best course of action for responding based on research and analysis of facts and law. Outlines summary of facts and recommends course of action for attorney managing the case. Drafts written memorandum of research for recommended course of action. Manages caseload/timeliness of files for attorney for responding and production of documents. Meets regularly with clients as part of research and analysis of facts.

•Researches and analyzes state and federal statutes, including federal acquisition regulations. Recommends course of action. Utilizes a general knowledge of the applicable state and federal laws and regulations regarding the assigned areas such as insurance, benefits and claims administration, employment, and/or government programs.

•Assists outside counsel and their staffs in producing discovery responses and works with them in preparing for depositions and trials. Interview and prepare witnesses for depositions.

Required Work Experience: 4 years legal experience including litigation and transactional work experience.

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree or associate degree and two years of legal work experience, or a Certificate in Paralegal Studies with three years of legal work experience.

Required Skills and Abilities:  Strong customer service orientation. Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to all levels in the company. Ability to make sound decisions. Ability to persuade, negotiate, or influence. Exercises confidentiality and discretion. Ability to solve problems with minimal supervision. Ability to deal with people at every level of the company, including dealing with a high level of exposure to senior management. Demonstrated initiative and highly motivated. General knowledge of the applicable state and federal laws and regulations regarding assigned areas such as insurance, benefits and claims administration, employment, and/or government programs.

Required Software and Other Tools:  Microsoft Office.

Preferred Work Experience:  6 years-legal experience including litigation and transactional work experience. Experience in an on-site corporate environment

Preferred Skills and Abilities: Self-starter, proactive problem solver, comfort and experience in learning by doing and handling multiple and varied issues; comfort and experience in working independently across areas in a large organization.

Preferred Software and Other tools:  Knowledge of Microsoft Access and other database software. Experience with document management system (such as Worldox) legal research tools (such as Lexis Nexis), strong internet research skills.

Preferred Licenses and Certificates:  Paralegal Certification.

Work Environment:  Typical on-site office environment. Some travel between buildings and out of town.
