We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Software Engineer who knows Java in HIVE.


Hive develops solutions for controlling and integrating everything in the home. We're connecting to your heating, smart plugs, light bulbs, sensors, solar batteries, heat pumps and more.The Abstraction Team develops code that runs the connectivity layer on the Hive Hub, which lives in millions of homes across the UK.

You will analyse, design, programs debug, and modifies software enhancements and/or new products used in local, networked, cloud-based or Internet-related computer programs. Code may be used in commercial or end-user applications, such as materials management, financial management, HRIS, mobile apps or desktop applications products.

Location: You can work in Windsor/home; we have people working all over the UK but also a range of office locations.

On a day-to-day basis you will:

  • Work in an agile environment with a dynamic and highly skilled team

  • Develop support for new devices and device types

  • Create 'synthetic devices' - combining multiple ordinary devices into something unique to the home solutions

  • Develop and maintain support for third party integrations

  • Review and enhance existing functionality, ensuring it is performant

  • Write and maintain a suite of automated tests that ensure the robustness of our system

As a Software Engineer, you will be expected to take on additional responsibilities such as:

  • Ensure projects are delivered on time and are fully functional

  • Ensure hub releases are performant and without significant issues

  • Architect solutions that are robust, reliable, and reusable

  • Work with stakeholders in other teams, such as product, to address issues or new developments

What we need from you:

  • Experience with an object-oriented language, design patterns, and multi-threaded development

  • Commercial experience with Java SE and Java build tools such as Maven and Gradle

  • Commercial experience with Git or other distributed version control systems (DVCS)

  • Experience in designing robust, highly scalable systems

  • Commercial experience with test frameworks at different levels of integration

  • Experience of working in an agile environment

  • Experience with radio and IP based protocols

  • Commercial experience with Linux environments and familiarity with cloud computing infrastructure
