Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is looking for Director 1 & Chief Engineer to join our team (2 positions available).   These leadership roles are based in Clearfield, Utah and will support a portfolio of programs within Aerospace Structures.

Aerospace Structures is a worldclass manufacturer of composite structures for commercial and military aircraft and launch vehicles.  The selected candidates will have responsibility for managing the technical performance and providing technical oversight to a multi-disciplinary engineering team.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensure the engineering team adheres to sound engineering processes across all disciplines

  • Manage, develop, and maintain engineering roadmaps for build to print capabilities, large-scale automation and provide technical oversight for R&D prototyping

  • Ensure staffing needs are met while providing development, hiring, and initiatives to retain effective engineering team

  • Design, development, lead preparation of and approve technical and cost inputs for all new proposals and ECPs to achieve program goals

  • Maintain cognizance and integration over technical activities operating units and ensure horizontal integration of the best engineering practices across the business unit

  • Support proposals and assist in the negotiation of work and create performance baseline plans

  • Maintain design authority for large complex structural assemblies


The successful candidate will demonstrate a collaborative leadership style, strong architecting skills, and highly effective communication skills. Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic organization and work collaboratively to influence and gain commitment to performance from all organizations and stakeholders. The leader must have both technical depth and breadth across aircraft fabrication and assembly (specifically composites), demonstrated creative complex structure and subsystem production / field issue resolution, as well as mission systems engineering knowledge.  The leader will provide advice and consultation to executive leadership on strategy and technical options and utilize their technical knowledge to pursue creative options that support our company and prime customer business decisions. The leader will also help shape the future business and develop strategies that drive customer success. for the business unit.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or other related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with at least 14 years of related experience; OR Master of Science (MS) in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or other related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with at least 12 years of related experience

  • 6 years technical manager experience which includes leading large, multifunctional engineering teams of at least 50 team members

  • 5 years of aircraft production or complex aircraft assembly experience of metallic or composite structures

  • Active DoD Secret or higher clearance (with a background investigation completed within the last 6 years or currently enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree(s) in Business/Management and/or Engineering

  • Composite and Metallic structure MRB experience

  • Aircraft producibility initiative management and issue resolution

Salary Range: $164,600.00 - $247,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
