Successful candidates for this position will be a Senior Principal Systems Engineer within the Tactical Space Division at Northrop Grumman Space Systems located in Dulles, VA, Gilbert, AZ and Redondo Beach, CA.  This position offers the opportunity to work on exciting space flight programs designed to further Civil and Commercial Space (CCS) technology to support human exploration, communication, science and research as well as support space logistics. 

The Senior Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for supporting key Systems Engineering (SE) deliverables as part of an Integrated Team at various program levels i.e. Mission-, Element-, and Segment-level.  The integrated team will incorporate the direction and results of a multi-disciplined engineering development of the space system architecture & elements.  The Senior Principal Systems Engineer is expected to guide the successful completion of the program by supporting in a leadership role as well as support and incorporate new company and industry driven technologies.   

The Senior Principal Systems Engineer position is expected to complete tasks without appreciable direction.  Completed tasks are reviewed from a relatively long- term perspective, for desired results.  The Senior Principal Systems Engineer is expected to represent the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects and to interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations. 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Provide support to all or selected segments for the SE Integrated Team in a leadership capacity. 

  • Support contractual technical reviews. 

  • Lead program in the execution of Systems Engineering processes and best practices for the development of spaceflight hardware against the baseline program plan to ensure a compliant and executable solution.   

  • Manage internal and external interfaces ensuring a complete and consistent definition of the Logical, Physical and Electrical interfaces on the program.  

  • Collaborate with the Mechanical, Electrical and Logic leads to ensure interface designs are captured and baselined, drive consistent approaches for interface definition and control, ensure comprehensive review and release of interface documentation with all stakeholders, and identify interface gaps. 

  • Review and ideally work in the Cameo Systems Architecture Model to ensure all interfaces are captured in the interface definition, and where applicable requirements coverage exists. 

  • Author the interface management plan for the program 

  • Lead a team to close interface gaps and document all changes within a formal change management process 

  • Interface with external stakeholders, including government furnished equipment (GFE) providers, the Launch Vehicle provider, and the customer to accomplish these duties.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Principal Systems Engineer: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field with at least 5 years of applicable experience, or Masters degree with 3 years of applicable experience.

  • Senior Principal Systems Engineer: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field with at least 9 years of applicable experience or Masters degree with 7 years of applicable experience.

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD security clearance

  • Proficiency in related engineering programs, Microsoft Office or equivalent document generation programs, Microsoft SharePoint or equivalent collaboration tool, Requirements management tool DOORS, Cameo Systems Modeler or other Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) like tools  

  • Experience in mechanical, electrical, and Logical interfaces with experience in Logic and one other in complex systems. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 9 or more years of applicable experience in a technical field with a preference of production or hardware development in the Aerospace industry 

  • Experience interfacing with different engineering disciplines to achieve program  objectives  

  • Authoring and releasing interface control documentation like ICDs/IDDs/IRDs 

  • Experience writing an interface management plan

  • Verifying Interfaces 

Salary Range: $107,300.00 - $160,900.00Salary Range 2: $133,000.00 - $199,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
