We have an exciting opportunity for a Legal Counsel role within the Treasury & Structured Finance Legal team at Santander UK, focused on our derivatives and securities finance businesses.
In your role you’ll be involved in drafting, reviewing, negotiating and delivering the legal documentation required for Santander UK’s corporate customer and wholesale markets derivatives and securities finance businesses, including working with deal and template documentation, legal opinions, trading infrastructure agreements and becoming involved with the implementation of regulatory changes.
The role will focus on identifying and managing legal risk, whilst facilitating the development and execution of the transactions of the businesses supported (including through the development of solutions to achieve business objectives or overcome legal, structuring or regulatory issues).
The difference you’ll make:
- Identifying and managing legal risk in relation to the activities supported by the Treasury & Structured Finance Legal team, whilst facilitating the development and execution of the activities of the relevant businesses (including through the development of solutions to achieve business objectives or overcome legal or other issues)
- Drafting, reviewing, negotiating and delivering legal documentation for Santander UK’s wholesale markets and customer derivatives businesses, including deal and template documentation, legal opinions, trading infrastructure agreements and involvement in the implementation of regulatory changes
- Analysing the implications of, communicating and embedding or reflecting in relevant documentation and transactions legal and regulatory developments or changes in Santander UK policies and procedures relevant to Santander UK’s products
- Liaising, developing and maintaining a working relationship with other teams in the wider Legal and Finance teams, including Tax, Risk, Compliance and Internal Audit
- working within all aspects of the wider Treasury & Structured Finance Legal team’s work (including structured notes and structured deposits, securitisations, and portfolio transfers) to ensure that effective support is provided to other team members when priorities change or at times of peak workload
What you’ll bring:
These are the essential requirements you need to be successful in this role:
- A solid understanding of derivatives, securities lending/repos, trading infrastructure and their regulatory framework
- Experience of secured lending, including facility agreements and intercreditor agreements and derivative/hedging agreements linked to those structures is preferred
- General banking or securitisation experience, with a desire to widen their understanding of derivatives, would also be suitable for this position
- Good knowledge and understanding of the regulatory framework applicable to UK financial services, industry trends and best practice, as well as experience working as part of a transactional environment (either in private practice or in house)
It would also be nice for you to have:
- Numeracy skills with good experience of Excel and PowerPoint
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
- Reputable commercial, pragmatic and enthusiastic approach in undertaking tasks
- Excellent time management skills

This role is based in London.

To support this, we offer site-based contracts with a hybrid working pattern and our expected level of attendance in an office is at least 12 days per month (pro-rata for part-time roles).
