Main Purpose:

Trade battery metals physically for both international and domestic business in China; develop the domestic metals or minerals products market; manage the P&L and risk.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities, Key Responsibilities:

More than 8 years’ experience with respect to the metals & minerals markets and/or related cross-commodity trading is an asset.

  • A full and detailed understanding of the fundamental drivers of the China Metals markets
  • Experience of developing & implementing of trading strategies and tactics with accountability for delivery against annual profit target
  • Good customer contacts
  • Knowledge of warehousing, finance, accounting and typical risk management methodologies
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, self-disciplined, Stress-resistant
  • Negotiation skills and ease of communication are an important component to succeed in the position
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills – both written and verbal

Key Relationships and Department Overview:

Commercial and Trading

  • Drives, develops and support the trading activity to expand the domestic and international business
  • Ensures continuous price discovery and keeping a constant up to date knowledge of the market at large  
  • Manages the book autonomously (within the risk limits); ensuring the business remains within the agreed risk and credit parameters, and identifying potential shocks that may cause these parameters to be breached
  • Contacts/visits customers to maintain long term relationship with the downstream party e.g. smelters, metals fabricators, steel mills and etc.
  • Maintains contacts (build & maintain network) with other industry participants including traders and brokers
  • Generates positive team P/L based on Physical Metals positions and related commodities positions (if any) for both domestic and international business
  • Works with various commodity/business to establish new business plans and strategies to support the long-term strategic business goals

Working with Others

  • Liaises with head office / other branches / derivatives team to identify opportunities, discuss the prevailing market and inform them of new developments
  • Liaises with Finance / Risk department to set up of new counterparties from a credit and risk profile, including regularly updating the credit and risk profile of existing customers
  • Liaises with Structured Trade Finance department to identify and develop financing and off-take opportunities
  • Collaborates with the operations team and helps to resolve problems whenever required to support smooth operating condition
  • Develops and maintains the relationship with other departments, key customers, local authorities and understands the government regulatory to support the continuous growth of China business
