UK Pension Investments

Location: UK, London (GSK HQ) – Full time - 2/3 days required in the office.

Are you energized by capital markets and do you want to work for a sponsor committed to driving better member outcomes in the Defined Contribution (DC) pensions space? The Pension Investments team at GSK is expanding its remit to provide expertise and thought leadership pertaining to its UK DC plan. The team currently oversees the investment and financial risk management strategy for GSK’s Global Defined Benefit (DB) pension plans and US DC plans. The team manages the investment committee meetings for the UK DB and US Retirement Plans, as well as the Company’s Pension and Risk Committee (chaired by the CFO).

As a key member of the Global Pension Investments team, you will help the team expand their coverage and provide valuable direction with regards to UK DC and actively participate in DC focused committee meetings, in close collaboration with GSK’s UK Benefits team. You will be familiar with the operation of DC plans, with best practices in this area, and with the regulatory landscape. You will help GSK navigate a rapidly evolving DC pensions landscape and corresponding industry innovation. Given the broader remit of the team, however, you will have the opportunity to be involved in key UK DB related activities as well as other pension arrangements around the world. You will help to formulate and ensure a cohesive global approach in line with broader Company guidelines and objectives.

You will be part of GSK’s Corporate Treasury department. You will report to the VP, Global Pension Investments and will benefit from analyst and manager level support for a number of the activities detailed below.

Internal clients will include, but not be limited to, the Group Treasurer, the CFO, GSK’s Pension and Risk Committee as well as various Trustee Boards and sub-committees. There will be considerable interaction with the UK Benefits team, and Pensions Finance (Accounting).  This role is market facing and external relationships include banks, fund managers and advisors (investment consultants, actuaries, lawyers).

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Strategic input and oversight

  • Bring vision and strategic direction to the investment structure of GSK’s UK DC plans
  • Identify areas for further research / analysis and help to develop tractable solutions
  • Work closely with investment advisors, leading market participants and policy markers. Take responsibility for ensuring best in class support is accessed and maintained
  • Review and challenge data, analysis and advice provided by external parties to GSK
  • Take charge in shaping the agenda and lead discussions on key investment related topics, including for the benefit of GSK’s senior management
  • Partner closely with GSK staff in different geographies and areas of the business

Operational assurance

  • Qualitative investment related input as necessary into participant communications
  • Input into compliance e.g. audit, corporate and pension related accounting statements
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and develop, apply and maintain internal controls and risk management processes
  • Quality assurance of implementation plans and other transition related activities

Monitoring and Governance

  • Monitor investment markets and their impact on the financial position of the pension schemes
  • Monitor and keep abreast of regulatory developments and their potential impact on the pension schemes, such as in relation to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors.  
  • Develop and support Company objectives to ensure coordinated corporate oversight where relevant
  • Oversee and be a key relationship contact for the various fund managers, across all asset classes. Including performance monitoring and value for money assessments
  • Maintain and review legal documentation with external parties, including fee negotiation and agreeing fund manager objectives, guidelines and restrictions (with legal / investment advice)
  • Maintain governance documents (e.g. investment policies, business plans, procedures) and ensure timely and robust decision-making processes are in place

  • A strong level of relevant work experience in the pensions / investment industry, with an interest in capital markets
  • Strong clarity of thought and an ability to analyze and dissect complex financial data
  • Excellent project management skills, with experience managing conflicting deadlines and priorities
  • Ability to work effectively across organizational boundaries and to build networks across the industry
  • Confident at liaising with and presenting to senior stakeholders
  • Self-starter, pro-active, results oriented with ability to function as a senior individual contributor
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to communicate complex business messages into clear communication messages and materials

Preferred Experience

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent academic qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Effective delegation to, and take an interest in developing, junior members of the team
  • Prior experience within a large, complex organisation, fund management business or consultancy
  • Experience working with corporate DB and DC schemes with regards to developing investment strategies
