What you will do

The Mechanical Engineering Intern supports the Salem Magnetic Bearing Team in the design and manufacture of magnetic bearings (AMBs) and/or high-speed compressor motors.

How you will do it

  • Participates with the ME team on design and development activities.
  • Designs fixtures, tooling and processes to support production manufacturing.
  • Coordinates Design for Manufacturing activities in support of design development.
  • Participates in product testing, utilizing company procedures and methodologies.
  • Maintains adherence to JCI and Salem MBT product design procedures.
  • Supports the manufacturing team as needed.
  • Solves problems at the engineering and production levels.
  • Maintains a safe working environment and supports a zero-harm culture.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

The requirements below are the minimum requirements an employee needs to fulfill this position. They are representative of the knowledge, skills and ability required for the position.

Education

Senior or graduate standing in a Mechanical Engineering program at an ABET-accredited institution preferred.

Coursework in one or more of the following areas is strongly preferred:

  • Design and/or operation of high-speed rotating equipment and turbo-machinery.
  • Design and/or operation of high-speed motors.
  • Design of assemblies of mechanical and/or electrical components.
  • Use of 3D modeling software (SolidWorks or Creo preferred) to design parts for fabrication and assembly.

Skills

  • Possess working knowledge of GD&T or be able to learn as part of on-the-job training.
  • Ability to independently perform basic research of background information that is relevant to a development program.
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess time management skills.
  • Possess a high proficiency in basic office and data analysis software (e.g. MS Excel, etc.).
  • Be able to use basic shop tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, micrometers, etc.
  • Have patience, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.
  • Be able to complete projects within assigned time and financial constraints.

Physical Demands

  • Employee must be able to be on his/her feet for extended periods of time.
  • Employee must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to use hands for assembly and tool usage.
  • Must not have allergies or issues related to handling metals including aluminum, copper, bronze, and steel.

Other Requirements

Must be able to read, write and speak English.

Must provide own living arrangements during the term of the internship.

Must provide own transportation to / from our plant in Salem, VA Monday-Friday during the internship. (Public transit is not available.)

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, heated mechanical parts, adhesive fumes, airborne particles, and energized electrical systems.  The work area is generally clean and safe, but there will be machining operations that generate moderate noise and metal flakes.

All necessary PPE (personal protective equipment) and safety training will be provided by the company.
