Position Summary...

This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the execution of food safety standards and controls related to upstream and downstream merchandising and operations strategic initiatives with third-party partners and exclusive suppliers. This position works closely with cross-functional teams (Operations, Merchandising, Walmart Brands, eCommerce, Format Development) across the business to develop, implement and maintain the systems, standards, procedures, internal controls, monitoring activities and effective remediation processes to ensure the third parties have appropriate food safety programs and processes in place to meet Walmart, and federal and provincial regulatory requirements and mitigate risk in the food system.

What you'll do...

Responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive third-party management program to ensure compliance with food safety standards by third party partners operating in-store food programs that align with or enhance Walmart’s own fresh and grocery offerings, last mile delivery partners and suppliers of food products that are exclusive to Walmart. Responsibilities extend upstream and downstream across the food supply chain for exclusive supplier / third party partners including: support of product launches, in-store physical and operational design (including equipment validation), delivery processes including cold chain compliance and safe handling controls, recalls, customer and regulatory inquiries and related investigation / remediation.

Conducts risk assessments and reviews of all proposed exclusive suppliers or third party in-store food partners.  This role with have the independent authority to approve or reject third parties / suppliers and to request they stop production of product if a food safety risk or critical regulatory finding has been identified. Responsible for conducting ongoing monitoring of suppliers and third-party partners. This includes conducting monthly meetings with the third parties and suppliers to review food safety concerns and findings (i.e. regulatory changes, audit findings, action plans, recalls, complaints, regulatory contacts, etc.) and to review the third party’s / supplier’s actions plans.

Develops and implements protocols for responding to food safety incidents involving third-party partners and exclusive suppliers. Coordinates with internal teams and external stakeholders to investigate and resolve incidents related to third-party partners. Communicates Walmart food safety standards and requirements for suppliers and third-party partners and supports monitoring and related remediation.

Accountable for collecting, analyzing and interpreting food safety data sets for all aspects of the food safety program to identify trends, patterns and areas of improvement in food safety performance. Drive data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement initiatives based on analytics. Partner with food safety leadership team to identify opportunities for automation in food safety processes and procedures. Lead the implementation of automated systems and tools to streamline food safety operations and improve efficiency. Monitor and optimize automated processes to ensure accuracy and effectiveness.

Accountable for reviewing and validating food area equipment and building / production area design to meet food safety requirements. Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the equipment validation testing program and managing third-party validation test labs, as well as ensuring results from validation testing are communicated to business partners. Responsible for ensuring action plans are developed and implemented for any non-compliances.

Responsible to develop ‘End to End Compliance by Design’ programs for food safety through leadership and support of project teams / third parties / suppliers to ensure accountability, contractual terms, regulatory and WM requirements, including post-project review / reporting and transition to business-as-usual. Responsible for ensuring the market food safety program meets the global food safety standards.

Subject matter expert in interpreting the Safe Food for Canadians Act and Regulations, provincial food safety regulations and other regulatory requirements associated with food products, food manufacturing, food packaging, etc. Tracks and completes impact assessments for changes in federal and provincial laws relevant to food safety and regulatory compliance and other regulatory initiatives, communicate changes and options to address business impact as appropriate. Manages collaboration and communication with internal stakeholders, third parties and with regulators.

Articulates corporate positions on compliance matters to regulators and external agencies and communicates directly with government officials. Develops external relationships and alliances strengthening the company’s reputation within compliance community and leads regulatory outreach meetings, ensuring that the company’s compliance programs, policies, procedures and reports are communicated in a persuasive, accurate and understandable way and that sensitive data is protected.

Qualifications:

  • BSc in Food Science, Microbiology or related field
  • 7+ years experience in a food safety role within the retail or manufacturing industry, leading as a Food Safety SME
  • Strong communication and relationship management skills
  • Experience developing and implementing related strategy, processes and requirements for business growth
  • Experience in Omni retail, as an asset
  • Power BI experience, as an asset
  • Past experience utilizing data and creating analytics, as an asset, or a willingness to learn these skills, as a must
