The position is part of the Global Specialty US Actuarial team supporting the Financial Lines book of business. This position will work in close partnership with our Underwriting Divisions as well as Finance, Claims, and IT departments.

Actuarial students are part of a very large student leadership development program that includes structured rotations, networking, teambuilding and very supportive exam benefits and rewards throughout their path to fellowship.

Responsibilities

As a key member of the Global Specialty Actuarial team, this individual will perform a variety of Actuarial projects across reserving and pricing.

Reserving

  • Complete reserve studies and advise management on reserve decisions.
  • Develop and maintain monitoring tools such as actual loss vs expectation.
  • Partner with the Claims Department to help inform reserve decisions.

Pricing

  • Refine, enhance, and/or create rating and pricing tools. 
  • Identify and analyze critical pricing and profitability benchmarks.
  • Analyze internal pricing results and competitor information when available.

General

  • Support financial planning and budgeting.
  • Collaborate with Underwriting to help guide and monitor strategy.
  • Initiate and participate in the development of procedures to improve data quality.
  • Seek out innovative approaches and apply R/SQL skills to enhance existing processes.
  • Present analyses and recommendations to teammates and business partners to guide future decisions.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Undergraduate degree with a major in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, or related field of study.
  • Minimum 1+ exams preferred, and pursuing toward Associate/Fellowship designation.
  • Minimum 1+ years of Property and Casualty Insurance Actuarial experience.
  • Knowledge of Actuarial pricing and reserving techniques.
  • Strong technical/analytical skills; High proficiency in Excel required and experience with R/SQL preferred.
  • General knowledge of Property and Casualty insurance operations.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills.
  • Independently motivated; constantly looks for areas to add value.
  • Teamwork skills including ability to effectively collaborate and work with individuals across various teams

Location:

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office (Hartford, CT; Chicago, IL; Charlotte, NC; or New York, NY) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$72,560 - $108,840

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
