This position is responsible for recording and reconciling the financial results for various Markel programs and insurance companies as part of the Close Control and Reporting (CCR) department within Markel’s finance group. CCR is responsible for the controls and processes around reporting Markel’s division and segment results. This position works closely with finance management while also gaining additional independence and responsibilities as a lead associate.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support the Oracle GL Record and Report Product Owners on planned initiatives and relevant core tasks.

  • Become a subject matter expert on the Oracle modules and tools, with specific responsibility for the update and governance of the Enterprise Data Management (EDM) and Profitability and Cost Management (PCM) modules.
  • Provide oversight and support to the Managed Services team responsible for routine Oracle operations work.
  • Be a representative on Oracle related meetings and initiatives, building effective relationships with key stakeholders across Finance, IT, Managed Services and Oracle.
  • Become a key liaison between the global accounting business and the IT functional team, helping to achieve optimal outcomes and alleviating key person dependency.
  • Partner with Finance leadership on clearly defining business requirements for proposed updates to the general ledger and associated Oracle modules.
  • Develop best practice guidance, conduct trainings and partner with the Finance team on enhanced use of the Oracle tools.
  • Ensure all key process controls and appropriate governance documentation is in place and kept up to date.
  • Liaise with external auditors and support information requests.

Education, knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

The successful candidate will:

  • Preferably have 3+ years Insurance experience
  • Preferably have some experience in the Financial Services industry and with Oracle products.
  • Support an environment of automation and IT based solutions.
  • Demonstrate good IT skills with the ability to adapt and practically utilize new technologies.
  • Display a methodical approach to work/tasks and excellent attention to detail.
  • Effectively communicate and liaise with local and global support partners.
  • Be able to adapt and pivot work responsibilities, based on task prioritization.
