Essential Functions

Walmart is seeking a Senior Director – international Strategy to work cross functionally and help shape how we are transforming our People data and systems across the entirety of Walmart’s International segment – including thriving businesses in Africa, Canada, Central America, China, Chile, India, and Mexico. Reporting to the SVP of International People, you’ll be a key partner in driving the most critical strategic digital projects and initiatives across the international segment. You’ll optimize all available tools, solutions and processes like machine learning, generative AI, and foundation data assets. If you love making impacts at massive scale, this is the role for you.

This role will lead the Walmart International people data and tech parity strategy in partnership with key enterprise and global people stakeholders across all Markets; This work includes close coordination with Global People Leaders, Global Tech, People Metrics, & Product among others. This work will be driven in alignment with specific time-bound goals established by the People Leadership Team.

  • Strategy Development: Defines and shapes a clear long-term vision / roadmap for the business/market/function in context of global environment and paint a compelling picture of new opportunities. Offer unique insights based on a deep understanding of political, social, business, market and finance trends; use insights to lead and influence change at strategic, tactical, team and individual levels across the organization. Develop strategy that is aligned with the organization's long-term plan and that anticipates and supports business need and ensures appropriate resources are allocated to deliver effectively, including goals to expand capacity, improve productivity and surpass industry benchmarks. Develop different perspectives of the business model (e.g. risk, innovation, investment, etc.); maximize opportunity and minimize risk; identify and focus on future critical areas for the organization. Establish relationships with external stakeholders to set strategic direction of future operational framework. Monitor and reviews changes in customer and competitor behavior and develop appropriate organization response. Determine impact of emerging business models and sponsor initiatives to deliver optimal response.

  • Provides overall direction by analyzing business objectives and customer needs; developing, communicating, building support for, and implementing business strategies, plans, and practices; analyzing costs and forecasts and incorporating them into business plans; determining and supporting resource requirements; evaluating operational processes; measuring outcomes to ensure desired results; identifying and capitalizing on improvement opportunities; promoting a customer environment; and demonstrating adaptability and sponsoring continuous learning.

  • Strategic Planning: Leverage strategic planning experience in multiple complex business environments (globally) to identify the key drivers of sustainable advantage across varying situations. Synthesize complementary and competing factors in a complex environment to determine trade-offs (e.g., resources, capital, technology, capabilities) when formulating the optimal strategy for the organization.

  • Develop strategy governance processes and measures for operational effectiveness and define organization's sustainable value-creation model that drives innovation. Use various data sources to identify leading indicators, predict competitors' initiatives, and drive contingency plans. Communicate the vision, strategy, and execution plan effectively, internally and externally, to gain support and compliance. Recommend new methods and approaches (e.g., scenario planning, war gaming) for strategy development. Reviews and evaluates achievements to enhance future planning and resource utilization. Define best visualization approach and solutions for specific business issues. Develops and implements strategies to attract and maintain a highly skilled and engaged workforce by diagnosing capability gaps; recruiting, selecting, and developing talent; supporting mentorship, workforce development, and succession planning; and leveraging the capabilities of new and existing talent.

  • Relationship Management: Build and maintain collaborative and strategic alliances with a wide range of partners across the business and industry; leverage their support to drive business programs & priorities. Create an environment that supports collaboration with people from different functions, cultures and have different perspectives. Provide insights on the impact of cross functional team collaboration on achieving strategic goals. Coach and support colleagues and stakeholders to develop their understanding of business and performance to identify solutions to deliver improved services, solutions, and relationships. Drive a culture that strives for diversity of thought and inclusion.

  • Cultivates an environment where associates respect and adhere to company standards of integrity and ethics by integrating these values into all programs and practices; developing consequences for violations or non-compliance; and supporting the Open Door Policy.

  • Project Management: Oversee multiple organization wide high-risk, high-cost projects involving cross-functional stakeholders. Establish decision framework, ensure role definition and clarity of deliverables and drive process management consistency. Monitor and review major projects for critical path and actual status versus planned, process & value gaps, mitigation strategies, financial goals and communication plans. Create and maintain project evaluation tools, methods, and performance dashboards and oversee development of project management methodologies, toolkits, and practices. Use persuasive arguments to influence others to achieve optimal outcomes and advocates a win-win approach to negotiating. Lead the development of communication and change frameworks to drive change management processes. Monitor industry for fresh approaches, benchmarking industry best practices and adjust approach in response to changing business needs. Champion use of agile methodology for talent acquisition across the enterprise; lead complex/multiple agile sprints (be a scrum of scrum) that have clearly defined epics, stories, tasks, prioritization, backlogs; defines and monitors agile project success metrics and conduct brokered conversations with business on setting expectations and delivering the end results.

  • Develops and leverages internal and external partnerships and networks to maximize the achievement of business goals by sponsoring and leading key community outreach and involvement initiatives; engaging key stakeholders in the development, execution, and evaluation of appropriate business plans and initiatives; and supporting associate efforts in these areas.

  • Strategy Support and Advisory: Evaluate proposed business cases for projects and initiatives across all businesses/markets to develop business strategy with top organizational leaders. Strategic contributor to business decision making regarding key business initiatives. Lead fact-based decision-making for long-term strategic issues; analyze the wider business and political implications when making decisions, including the effectiveness of the outcome. Use a variety of data gathering, problem solving and analytical techniques that consider various businesses and own values and objectives and the type of recommendations to be made. Align stakeholders across leadership with respect to any changes that will impact business strategy and objectives. Coach and support colleagues and stakeholders to develop their understanding of business finances and performance to identify solutions to deliver improved services, solutions, and relationships.

  • Business Acumen: Develop business strategy with executive leaders. Evaluate and validate proposed business cases for projects and initiatives. Demonstrate deep expertise and functioning of multiple businesses and how it integrates in the global scenarios. Approve strategies, initiatives, and projects. Determine metrics and performance indicators. Contribute to strategic business decision making regarding key initiatives. Outline business cases to be developed and drives delivery of work that has meaningful return on investment to the business. Develop new enterprise-wide processes and ways of working.   • Financial Acumen: Understand the big picture, financial frameworks, contract, and legal structures and how it all applies together.
