Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Director, Engineering to oversee engineering and partner with the Sector’s Research & Advance Design (R&AD) organization. The selected leader will serve as the organization’s Engineering director and report to the Sector Vice President of Engineering while being matrixed to the Sector Vice President of Research & Advanced Design.   

 

The Director will have responsibilities for engineering across the broad R&AD portfolio and will collaborate with R&AD leaders and functional leadership teams to ensure unified engineering support across all programs and efforts.  The leader will be responsible for managing the organization’s engineering success and providing oversight and leadership to a multi-disciplinary Engineering team of matrixed engineers.  This leadership position is based in El Segundo or San Diego, CA.

 

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Serve as primary Engineering interface for the organization

  • Provide oversight and support to the organizations Chief Engineer & Sector CTO

  • Identify and help lead solutions to program and portfolio technical challenges

  • Maintain cognizance and integration over technical activities and ensure horizontal integration of the best engineering practices across the organization

  • Develop strategy for key leadership positions on programs, captures and maintain succession pipeline and plans

  • Ensure engineering is tracking to EAC

  • Ensure accurate staffing demand profiles by program and/or future captures

  • Ensure staffing needs are met while providing development, hiring, and initiatives to retain effective engineering staff

  • Enable strong partnership and consistent communication between organization and Engineering functional teams


This leader must have a collaborative leadership style, strong architecting skills, and mature communication skills. Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced dynamic organization and work collaboratively to influence and gain commitment to performance from all organizations and stakeholders. The leader must have both technical depth and breadth across engineering disciplines, strong systems engineering skills, and an entrepreneurial mindset.  Experience developing demonstrators and prototypes on small high performing teams highly desired. The leader will provide advice and consultation to executive leadership on strategy and technical options and utilize their technical knowledge to pursue creative options that support our company and business decisions and drive customer success. The leader will also help shape the future business and developing strategies that strive to bring the best value.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline and 12 years of related professional and/or military experience, OR a Master’s Degree in a STEM discipline and 10 years of related professional and/or military experience.

  • 6 years of experience as a technical leader

  • Management experience of large multifunctional engineering teams

  • Must have an active DoD secret or higher clearance (with a background investigation completed within the last 6 years or currently enrolled into Continuous Evaluation)

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance prior to the commencement of employment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree(s) in Engineering or Business/Management

  • Understanding of business processes and working knowledge of business systems

  • Experience developing demonstrators and prototypes on small high performing teams

Salary Range: $228,700.00 - $343,100.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
