The Red Hat Experience Engineering (XE) team is looking for a Software Maintenance Engineer to help lead a new team aimed at improving the long-term product experience of our Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) customers. In this role, you will work closely with Product Engineering to deliver on extended product maintenance work, including handling defects, bugs, and CVEs in any extended life streams of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Focused on product development that goes beyond the normal 6 month maintenance phase of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) minor releases, you will actively lead EUS, TUS, E4S, AMC, and ELS lifestreams. You'll be actively leading all aspects of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) maintenance. You will co-lead our patch review process, the development and execution of backports and test plans, and the creation of automation tools to improve the efficiency, flexibility, and quality of Red Hat’s patch delivery to customers. You will gain a deep understanding of a variety of technologies from Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). *Ability to work Hybrid from Boston MA, Raleigh NC or Westford MA.
To succeed in this role, you’ll need to be detail focused and mindful of following secure coding standards as you’ll be working on stable streams. You’ll work with older streams that have their own specifics, requiring troubleshooting of potential problems. Some of the work may be automated, so previous experience and willingness to work with automation tooling could save you time.
Work on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) updates and be responsible for the updates in the stable streams
Backport selected security and other bug fixes into the stable release streams and help with tracking of upstream patches for backport
Configure or backport tests, set up test environment, run tests, and verify fixes
Help with the development of the tests and test framework
Help with development and integration efforts of the test environment
Troubleshoot any potential issues, collaborate with the engineering team on resolving them
Collaborate with various teams (product engineering, quality engineering, program management, release engineering) in order to deliver updates in a timely manner and appropriate quality
Participate in product engineering team meetings
Bachelor's or higher degree in computer science or a related engineering field, or relevant professional experience
2+ years experience working in the software field
Ability to work Hybrid from Boston MA, Westford MA or Raleigh NC.
Experience in open source software and development
Intermediate knowledge of Linux and programming languages like C, C++, Python, Ruby, Ruby on Rails
Familiarity with scripting using Bash or Python, or both
Experience with software test planning, test cases design, test script automation, and documentation
Experience working with Git (cherry-picking, merging, rebasing, etc. )
Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with a global team
Solid written and verbal communication skills in English
Prior participation and active community member in open source software projects is a significant advantage
Creative, motivated, and capable of working both independently and as part of a globally distributed team
Pay Transparency
Red Hat determines compensation based on several factors including but not limited to job location, experience, applicable skills and training, external market value, and internal pay equity. Annual salary is one component of Red Hat’s compensation package. This position may also be eligible for bonus, commission, and/or equity. For positions with Remote-US locations, the actual salary range for the position may differ based on location but will be commensurate with job duties and relevant work experience.
