Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Zone Manager, the Basic Mechanic performs multi-craft maintenance, operation, and repair of commercial/academic and multi-tenant building systems as needed including but not limited to the inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment and systems. Multi-craft maintenance activities may include working with HVAC, plumbing, electrical work, paint and carpentry. Employees in this position will be required to do all mechanical and operational duties and to assist other Mechanics as needed. Must be able to perform while working alone or in a team setting. Willingness to work overtime to support the University is a requirement.

This position is a member of the collective bargaining unit, Local #148 International Union of Operating Engineers, AFL-CIO.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

    • Assisting with, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing of a variety of systems.
    • Repairs and performs preventative maintenance of academic, office and research building systems.
    • Performs carpentry, drywall and finishes, basic plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and mechanic system tasks.
    • Performing annual equipment teardowns, corrective and preventative maintenance in preparation for inspections and seasonal lay-up. 
    • Responding to work orders in and other requests in a timely, efficient, competent, knowledgeable and friendly manner.
    • Pro-actively identifying, communicating and addressing needs without direction when appropriate.
    • Maintaining data per departmental policy.
    • Utilizing materials, supplies, tools and other University property in a safe, productive manner.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Two years technical schooling and one plus years of experience in an institutional campus environment.
    • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated abilities with the Microsoft office suite.
    • Effective organization skills and ability to prioritize workload.

    Required Qualifications

    • A minimum of two years technical schooling, recognized apprenticeship program or equivalent training program or five years of work experience.
    • Must be able to obtain a Missouri Class E Driver’s License by the end of the Probationary period and cannot drive University owned vehicles until Class E Driver’s License is obtained.
    • Capable of doing extensive walking, climbing stairs/ladders, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. and other similar physical activity.
    • Must be willing to provide one’s own hand tools.

    Salary Range

    $27.38

    The salary rate for this position is determined by the current union contract. Please note that there may be salary differentials for working second or third shifts.
