The opportunity 

Our Treasury team is seeking an Associate to join the team in providing funding and liquidity management needed for the Fund's investment strategy. Here, you would support team members in their core treasury functions which include ensuring sufficient liquidity reserves in the total fund portfolio, managing overall money market portfolio and raising required capital for funding new investment activity and meeting all day-day obligations.  You will take an active role in learning about the wide variety of fixed income treasury products with a particular focus on medium term debt issuance. 

As part of the daily Treasury accountabilities is the management of Ontario Teachers’ variety of funding levers and the management of liquidity reserves, with a focus in fixed income markets. Treasury utilizes secured and unsecured forms of funding in multiple asset classes and currencies and is responsible for the development of cost-effective, scalable and stable funding strategies that can adapt to changes in the investment program and risk appetite. 

Who you’ll work with 

Joining a team of 7 professionals, you will have the opportunity to work with diverse products including secured funding (repo, securities borrowing), unsecured funding (commercial paper, medium term notes, and liquidity management (money market investments) with a specific focus on unsecured funding. You will also support funding strategies that enable the investment program while maintaining sufficient liquidity at the most efficient cost of funds. There are daily interactions with groups across the fund including Capital Markets, Risk, other teams within Total Fund Management and members of Senior Management in support of enabling the evolving investment program.  

Treasury sits within Total Fund Management, the group that forms the nucleus of the CIO’s office. Treasury sets the direction for the investment funding strategy with a focus on Ontario Teachers’ balance sheet including portfolio construction and global trading alongside our treasury and funding capabilities. 

What you’ll do  

  • Contribute to decision-making concerning all funding levers within Ontario Teachers’ with a focus on unsecured funding (including medium-term debt and commercial paper programs) 

  • Support the senior team members in structuring, recommending and execution of the medium-term debt issuances 

  • Work closely with the senior team members on the full life cycle of the medium-term debt issuance program including analytics development, monitoring market conditions and investor appetite, relationship building with the dealer community, supporting investor marketing efforts, and interaction with various internal stakeholders 

  • Support the various Treasury activities to enable the current and forward-looking investment and funding plan 

  • Participate in cross-training and providing coverage on areas such as secured funding, and liquidity management 

  • Develop, maintain and enhance market and funding related analytics and reporting to support the Treasury desk 

  • Research and support the development of funding strategies 

  • Work with internal / external partners. 

  • Support senior team members and recommend solutions on all Treasury mandates with a focus on the medium-term debt issuance program.

 What you’ll need  

  • A related undergraduate degree with a strong academic record and quantitative background or master’s degree in a finance related field 

  • A minimum of 2 years of Capital Markets experience. Direct experience in fixed income trading and funding markets considered an asset.

  • Completed or working towards CFA designation 

  • Interest in capital markets including short-term fixed income markets 

  • Interest in all secured and unsecured funding – repo, equity finance, commercial paper and medium-term debt issuance 

  • Demonstrate an ability to be a collaborative team-player, performing various functions as required 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 

  • Demonstrate a comfort with the management of risk and compressed timelines for decisions and the completion of tasks 

  • Proficiency in programming and database management
