This role is part of the New Shepard program. New Shepard is a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line – the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of Launch Operations Technicians you will support the maintenance, modification, repair and refurbishment of the New Shepard Launch Vehicle and the Launch and Landing Complex/Ground systems. You will demonstrate operational excellence in maintenance and launch procedure execution, reviewing, improving, and following procedures and processes. Working with System Engineers, Maintenance Engineers and Vehicle Managers on planning and completing daily scheduled tasks. We will rely on you to lead troubleshooting and maintenance of vehicle and ground systems and ground support equipment. You will safely work with hazardous chemicals and high-pressure fluid systems. Finally, you will find opportunities for continuous improvements to promote workplace safety, achieve cost-savings, and make test stand operations more streamlined and consistent.

Van Horn specific information:

Being at the heart of Blue Origin operations, the West Texas Site in Van Horn, TX offers eligible employee’s additional attractive financial incentives to supplement their competitive base earnings, including a living allowance and relocation assistance. Eligibility for these additional benefits is based on the employee’s ability to permanently relocate to Van Horn, TX, or travel to Van Horn from another Blue location a minimum of 50% of the time.

This position will be on a 16 days on 12 days off rotation.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Launch Vehicle Maintenance Repair, Modification and Refurbishment
  • Launch Complex Maintenance Repair, Modification and Refurbishment
  • Launch Vehicle Launch and Recovery Operations
  • Installation and checkout of wire harnesses electrical components and instrumentation
  • Reviewing, work instructions for accuracy and providing feedback to Maintenance Engineers
  • Working with engineers on design concepts/improvements and vehicle and ground system development
  • Work with Engineering to develop detailed work instructions for complex electrical and mechanical installations, repairs and modifications to vehicle and ground systems.
  • Providing design feedback on Vehicle, Ground System and Ground Support Equipment (GSE).
  • Perform test article integration and checkout.
  • General troubleshooting of Instrumentation, and flight avionics systems.
  • Safely working with hazardous chemicals and high-pressure/high voltage systems
  • Understanding of 5S and FOD control procedures and Quality Management System (AS9100)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work varying work schedules and shifts.
  • Attention to Detail and focus on Safety and Quality (High Workmanship standards)
  • Strong character and work ethic.
  • Knowledge of and ability to safely work with standard mechanical tools and shop fabrication equipment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with Test, flight and safety critical hardware.
  • Experience with Data Acquisition Systems and Sensors.
  • Experience with Avionics test tools (Multimeters, Oscilloscopes, Signal Generators etc.).
  • Identify non-conformances and support in implementation of corrective actions.
  • Experience with electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and pressurized gas/fluid systems.
  • Ability to interpret engineering models, drawings, specifications, written work instructions, and test procedures.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Able to lift 40 lbs.; work from heights (excess of 150’) and in varying weather conditions; climb stairs and ladders.
  • Experience with Data Acquisition Systems and Sensors.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion. 
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited aerospace or aviation related program.
  • A&P mechanic with 3-5 years’ experience.
  • Military Aviation veteran with 4-8 years in an aviation or relevant field
  • Technician from an outside space company (SpaceX, Rocket Lab, etc.) with 3-5 years’ related experience for the role.
  • FAA Airframe and Power plant license
  • IPC-620 with space addendum or equivalent
  • Familiar with MIL 38999 connectors and wire harness assembly and repair.
  • Understanding of handling and working with pyrotechnic devices and ordnance.
  • In-depth knowledge of rocket propellants including Lox, LH2 and other cryogenic commodities
