Job Description:

What You’ll Do

Works on more complex, less clearly-defined software projects under limited supervision. Applies a full understanding of established systems software development principles and best practices to analyze complex issues. Updates or modifies working methods in their own role/work area without the benefit of defined procedures.

Application Engineers are expected to have a high level of knowledge of domain technologies, platforms and systems software development principles and best practices to independently resolve problems and make major changes to existing processes/systems.

How You’ll Do It

  • Actively engage in data design and architectural reviews for infrastructure and tools that enhance engineering productivity and efficiency
  • Utilize multiple development languages/tools such as Ab Initio ETL, Python, Java to build prototypes and evaluate results for effectiveness and feasibility.
  • Adopt and influence domain driven design and architecture principles of security, scale, uptime and reliability
  • Operationalize open-source data-analytic tools for enterprise use.
  • Develop real-time data ingestion and streaming solutions leveraging technologies such as Kafka, Apache Spark, Python/Java.
  • Custom Data pipeline development (Cloud and locally hosted)
  • Provide support for deployed data applications and analytical models by being a trusted advisor to Data Scientists and other data consumers by identifying data problems and guiding issue resolution with partner Data Engineers and source data providers.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in the analysis, preparation of specifications and plans for the development of data processes.
  • Ensure proper data governance policies are followed by implementing or validating Data Lineage, Quality checks, classification, etc. Contributes to and leads technology communities of practice at Discover in areas of design-thinking, tools/technology, agile software development, security, architecture and/or data.
  • Creates and enforces IT standards within the system/application infrastructure and compatibility with the architecture of the platform
  • Analyze, design, program, test, and deploy new user stories and features with high quality (security, reliability, operations) to production.  Understands the software development lifecycle and leverages critical thinking skills to properly evaluate features and functionality.
  • Guides early-career engineers by providing learning tasks as well as work related tasks, directs the work of emerging talent, and helps them continue to grow in their technical skillset through mentorship.
  • Has an oversight on application, system, and architecture design decisions and guides team to achieve key results for products assigned to them.
  • Remediates issues using engineering principles and creates proactive design solutions for potential failures to ensure high reliability of technical solutions.
  • Achieves team commitments (and influence others to do the same) through collaboration with other engineers, architects, product owners and data scientists.

Qualifications You’ll Need

The Basics

  • Bachelors – Computer Science, Engineering or related
  • 3+ Years – Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related
  • Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of competent on the Dreyfus engineering scale

Physical And Cognitive Responsibilities

  • Primarily remain in a stationary position.
  • No required movement about the work environment to complete the major responsibilities of the job.
  • Primarily performed indoors in an office setting.
  • Ability to operate office equipment such as but not limited to computer, telephone, printer, and calculator.
  • Ability to communicate verbally.; Ability to communicate in written form.

Bonus Points If You Have

  • 2+ years of hands-on AbInitio, Python, and SQL experience; PostgreSQL knowledge is a bonus
  • Strong experience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins, or similar; Ab Initio EME; Git/GitHub; Artifactory
  • A desire to write tools and applications to automate work rather than do things manually
  • Foundational understanding of software programming
  • Experience implementing Continuous Integration and Delivery processes
  • Experience with microservices, containers, and/or Kubernetes
  • Strong experience with Database Management; Snowflake MPP experience a plus
  • Experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scalability) on new and current systems.
  • Experience developing, deploying and maintaining large-scale Cloud-native solutions
  • Experience building data pipelines to ingest data into data lake

Compensation:

The base pay for this position generally ranges between $86,500.00 to $146,100.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package. Factors, such as but not limited to, geographical location, relevant experience, education, and skill level may impact the pay for this position.
