Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Monitoring Tools Subject Matter Expert (SME) to lead the transition of monitoring tools and processes from an incumbent service provider to internal operations. The SME will play a crucial role in ensuring a seamless handover, optimizing the configuration of monitoring platforms, and ensuring the continuity of monitoring services during and after the transition. This role requires deep technical expertise in enterprise monitoring tools, automation of monitoring processes, and integration across complex IT infrastructures.

Key Responsibilities:

Transition of Monitoring Tools:

  • Lead the transition of monitoring tools (e.g. Splunk, Prometheus, Datadog, Dynatrace, etc.) from the incumbent service provider to in-house management.

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive transition plan that includes timelines, deliverables, and risk management strategies to ensure operational continuity.

  • Collaborate with the incumbent provider to gather documentation, tool configurations, dashboards, and monitoring scripts.

  • Conduct knowledge transfer sessions with internal teams, ensuring they fully understand the monitoring tool setup, configurations, and operational workflows.

  • Ensure successful handover of monitoring infrastructure, processes, and tools, maintaining full operational functionality post-transition.

Tool Installation, Configuration, & Optimization:

  • Oversee the installation, configuration, and customization of monitoring tools to align with organizational needs and industry best practices.

  • Customize dashboards, alerting thresholds, and monitoring rules to meet the specific requirements of the organization and its IT infrastructure.

  • Ensure the integration of monitoring tools with various enterprise applications, servers, networks, and cloud platforms for end-to-end visibility.

  • Document tool configurations, monitoring processes, and workflows for future reference and ongoing maintenance.

Monitoring & Performance Management:

  • Ensure that monitoring tools are correctly tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) and service level agreements (SLAs) across IT infrastructure, applications, and services.

  • Implement proactive monitoring strategies, including predictive analysis and trend-based alerts, to prevent performance degradation or outages.

  • Set up automated alerting mechanisms to notify relevant teams of issues, ensuring quick resolution and minimizing downtime.

  • Continuously monitor tool performance, identifying areas for improvement and tuning configurations to optimize system performance and alerting accuracy.

Incident Management & Troubleshooting:

  • Act as the lead technical expert for troubleshooting and resolving issues related to monitoring tools during and after the transition.

  • Ensure timely and accurate responses to incidents detected by monitoring tools, including root cause analysis and post-incident reporting.

  • Develop and maintain incident management protocols, including clear escalation paths and resolution procedures for monitoring-related incidents.

Collaboration & Knowledge Transfer:

  • Collaborate with IT, DevOps, and application development teams to ensure seamless integration of monitoring tools with internal processes and systems.

  • Provide training and mentorship to internal teams, ensuring that all staff are equipped to manage and maintain monitoring tools after the transition.

  • Act as a point of contact for all monitoring tool-related inquiries, offering guidance and support to cross-functional teams.

Process Automation & Optimization:

  • Identify opportunities to automate monitoring processes, including automated remediation workflows for common incidents.

  • Leverage monitoring tools to support infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and continuous monitoring processes across cloud and on-premises environments.

  • Continuously assess and optimize monitoring coverage, alert thresholds, and tool configurations to reduce false positives and improve response times.

Compliance & Best Practices:

  • Ensure that all monitoring tools and processes adhere to internal security policies, compliance regulations, and industry best practices.

  • Maintain proper access control and security standards within monitoring tools to safeguard sensitive data.

  • Regularly audit monitoring configurations and ensure compliance with both internal and external audit requirements.

Vendor Management & Tool Lifecycle:

  • Manage relationships with monitoring tool vendors to receive support, upgrades, and resolve technical issues as needed.

  • Oversee tool licenses, ensuring compliance with agreements and managing renewals or expansions as required.

  • Stay informed on emerging monitoring technologies, evaluating their potential to improve current toolsets and recommending new tools for adoption.
