What Is the Opportunity?

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the handling of first party property claims including: investigating, evaluating, estimating and negotiating to ensure optimal claim resolution for personal or business claims of moderate to high severity and complexity. Provides quality claim handling throughout the claim life cycle (customer contacts, coverage, investigation, evaluation, reserving, negotiation and resolution) including maintaining full compliance with internal and external quality standards and state specific regulations. Provides consulting and training resources, and serves as a contact and technical resource to the field and our business partners.

What Will You Do?

  • Virtually handle 1st party PI and BI Property claims of moderate to high severity and complexity as assigned in compliance with provincial regulations where applicable and within quality standards and expectations per File Standards and established Best Practice guidelines. Manage pending and settle claims within company averages based on type of claim, complexity of claim and geographical area. Identify and follow up on all salvage and subrogation opportunities promptly. Manage file inventory to ensure timely resolution of cases. Ensure all claims files and company information are kept confidential.
  • Make contact with insured and return all phone calls and emails. Provide clear explanation of claims process and coverage to all customers within Best Practice guidelines. Write denial letters, Reservation of Rights and other complex correspondence to insureds. Provide excellent customer service to meet the needs of the insured, broker and all other internal and external customers. Occasional travel for Catastrophe Duty, including other offices and provinces may be required.
  • Document claims files and manage diary system follow up on all files to ensure prompt disposition in accordance with Claim Property Best Practices and Quality File Standard guidelines. Establish timely and accurate claim and expense reserves. Post all reserves in system within Best Practice guidelines and update system promptly as new information is received.
  • Investigate and evaluate all relevant facts to determine coverage, damages and liability of first-party Property claims under a variety of policies with a level of investigation that is commensurate with the financial exposure on each loss handled. Establish accurate scope of damages for building and contents losses and utilize as a basis for written estimates and/or computer assisted estimates. Determine cases that may have fraud potential and to refer claims to Travelers Investigative Services.
  • Review and analyze policy conditions, provisions, exclusions and endorsements pertinent to a variety of property losses. Research company experience/available case law to substantiate quantum, coverage and liability for casualty claims. Advise Underwriting of any information gathered which may affect risk assessment. Obtain and analyze leases, contracts, by-laws and other relevant documents which may have an impact on the adjustment of losses. Review amounts on all invoices and all documentation supporting payments.
  • Determine appropriate settlement amount based on independent judgment, computer assisted building and/or contents estimate, estimation of actual cash value and replacement value, contractor estimate validation, appraisals, application of applicable limits and deductibles. Negotiate and convey claim settlements within authority limits to insureds. Control damages through proper usage of cost containment tools. Explain payment amounts to all customers by email or letter. Refer all files above settlement authority, with recommendations for resolution, to Unit Manager and follow up through closure.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • College degree or equivalent in business discipline.
  • Previous property claim handling experience.
  • Knowledge of construction, estimating and estimating system (Xactimate)
  • Advanced verbal and written communications skills.
  • CIP designation.
  • Advanced organizational skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Intermediate analytical skills.
  • Advanced negotiation skills.
  • In order to perform the essential job functions of this job, acquisition and maintenance of Insurance License(s) may be required to comply with provincial and Travelers requirements.

What is a Must Have?

  • A minimum of one year previous work experience.
  • Experience utilizing computer technology; such as Microsoft Office, e-mail, Web-enabled applications, and database software required.
  • Ability to accurately compute a variety of numerical calculations required.
