    Under the direct supervision of the Manager, Clinical/Quality Education, or designee, and in collaboration with Volunteer Services, the General Clerk, Surgery Waiting Room, is responsible for opening and maintaining the surgery waiting room to receive patients and patients families and friends in supporting/maintaining communications between the operating room, surgeons, and waiting room guests regarding the surgical patients status.

    A caregiver in this position works 6:00am-2:30pm
     

    A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

    • Opens and prepares the Surgery Welcome Center to accept patients, patients' families and friends in a clean, comfortable environment.
    • Obtains operating room schedule from the O.R. control desk documenting additions and cancellations throughout the day.
    • Greets patients, families, and visitors in a kind and courteous manner
    • Logs the family/visitor on the O.R. schedule and informs them about the purpose of the Surgery Welcome Center and the location of complementary hot drinks, rest rooms, and telephones.
    • Distributes pagers to family/visitors explaining their use and function. Documents pager distribution and retrieves them when appropriate.
    • Distributes tracker number and instructions to follow the patient's movement throughout the day.
    • Directs patients to the appropriate Registration Clerk.
    • Checks-In patient and enters patient as ?arrived? in Epic system.
    • Hands out specimen collection cup to applicable patients with explanation of its use.
    • Monitors patient Check-In status and calls patient when late to determine status.
    • Assigns and gives direction to the use of the lockers for patient belongings.
    • Locates family/visitors for surgeons when requested directing them to a confidential conference room. Documents time of surgeon visit/call.
    • Notifies family/visitors of patient delays and patient transfers to nursing units or discharge area and documents times on operating room schedule.
    • Escorts/Directs patients and families to PSU, PACU, or other locations as needed.
    • Works in collaboration with volunteers.
    • Provides emotional support to anxious family members and assists them in any manner requested in order to make their stay pleasant and comfortable, maintaining an open line of communication.
    • Notifies Housekeeping and Maintenance of situations which require their assistance.
    • Makes hourly rounds to check on Welcome Center visitors and other department needs.
    • Performs clerical duties: Stocks and orders needed supplies, files, performs errands as necessary.
    • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans and procedures.
    • Completes annual on-going competency requirements.
    • Follows hospital and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance, punctuality, confidentiality, dress code, and safety.
    • Other duties as assigned


    Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
