Dialysis Technicians are responsible for operating dialysis machines and monitoring patients undergoing dialysis treatment for kidney failure. They ensure the dialysis process is safe, efficient, and effective. They work under the supervision of registered nurses and nephrologists.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Preparation:

  • Prepare patients for dialysis treatment by taking and recording vital signs, reviewing patient history, and explaining the procedure.
  • Assess the patient’s vascular access to ensure it is functioning properly.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

  • Set up, operate, and monitor dialysis machines during treatment sessions.
  • Ensure the dialysis machine and associated equipment are functioning properly.
  • Perform regular maintenance and sterilization of dialysis equipment to ensure patient safety.

Patient Monitoring:

  • Monitor patients during dialysis treatment, observing for any adverse reactions or complications.
  • Record patient information such as vital signs, weight, and fluid removal amounts during and after treatment.
  • Communicate any concerns or unusual findings to the supervising nurse or physician.

Technical Skills:

  • Insert needles into patients' fistulas or grafts for access to the bloodstream.
  • Manage the flow of blood to and from the dialysis machine.
  • Adjust dialysis machines as necessary to ensure optimal performance.

Patient Care and Support:

  • Provide compassionate care and emotional support to patients undergoing dialysis.
  • Educate patients about dialysis treatment and self-care post-treatment.
  • Assist patients with any needs during their dialysis sessions.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient treatment, including any issues or complications that arise.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or patient concerns to the appropriate healthcare staff.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Adhere to all safety and infection control protocols to prevent contamination and infection.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.
