The Mental Health Assistant has responsibility to provide 1:1 care to the child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient being treated for cardiovascular, transplant, medical, surgical, oncological, neurological, psychiatric, rehabilitation, women's and children's conditions who have been determined to require close observation. This job functions as a primary partner/team member based on the interdisciplinary plan of care while maintaining a safe, clean environment. This job also function as a primary partner/team member based on medical orders and the plan of care develop by RN or licensed independent practitioner while maintaining a clean safe environment.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: N/A

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent

Experience REQUIRED: N/A

Experience PREFERRED:
Allied health or nursing student, EMT, Medical Assistant or Nursing Assistant experience
Previous experience working with persons with emotional and mental disorders and children and adults with challenging behaviors

Education/training REQUIRED:
High school diploma or GED

Education/training PREFERRED:
Completion of EMT, Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant Program

Independent action(s) required:
Provides direct patient observation and engagement in activities of daily living and recreational/ under the direction of a LIP, manager and RN in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policy/procedure
Report deviations from care to licensed nurse.
Reports observations directly to licensed staff nurses.
Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.

Additional position requirements: Patient Safety
Mental Health Assistants work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific Nurse Manager/Practice Manager.
Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements or as is in the best interest of the work unit.

Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs. Lifting 50-100 lbs.
Other: Patient movement greater than 100lbs requiring Patient Safety Assistant to request assistance from the licensed nurse:
Activities: Prolonged standing, Prolonged sitting, Frequent bending, Walking (distance), Climbing (steps, ladder, other), Reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive), Repetitive motion
Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, Reasoning, Problem solving, Hearing, Speak clearly, Write legibly, Reading, Logical thinking
Emotional: Steady pace, Frequent and intense customer interactions, Noisy environment, Able to adapt to frequent change
