Responsibilities
Wastewater testing is a relatively new and rapidly expanding surveillance method already extensively used for COVID-19 and other critical pathogens. The Research Scientist II (RSII) will collaborate with the testing laboratories, sequencing consortium labs, New York State Department of Health Epidemiologists, and state agencies, to analyze wastewater data. This will include data on detected pathogens and wastewater markers, such as viral detection and quantitation, antimicrobial resistance markers and opiates. The RSII will perform requested custom analyses and generate analyzed results and reports to inform public health decisions. Other appropriate related duties as assigned.
This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center’s mission in the New York State Department of Health’s efforts to protect and promote the health of New York’s citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health®!
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field and three years of research experience; OR a Master’s degree in a related field and two years of research experience; OR a Doctorate in a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
At least one year of experience in bioinformatics data analysis and use of scientific software to analyze next generation sequence data for the detection and/or characterization of pathogens. Experience working in Google Cloud Platform or other cloud platforms. Experience in programming (Python, shell, C/C++, perl or other programming/scripting languages). Experience in collaborative coding environments (GitHub). Experience in interfacing sequence reports and results with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Conditions of Employment
Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting may be available.
Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.
This position may require occasional work on weekends, after-hours, and holidays.
