Group Accounting is focused on ensuring the quality of our financial reporting and controls.  This includes external communications and reporting, global accounting policy, reporting systems, processes and controls. The Capital Accounting, Reporting & Control team was set up to ensure accuracy and consistency for consolidation of all Manulife companies for our externally reported accounting basis (currently IFRS 17), for accounting of capital transactions, closing of the consolidated balance sheet and special projects including reorganizations, acquisitions and disposals of subsidiaries. The team also has subject matter experts pertaining to the Infor General Ledger, FX accounting and processes, consolidation accounting and the intercompany loan administration system (Kyriba).

The Manager, Capital Accounting, Reporting & Control reports to the AVP, Capital Accounting, Reporting & Control and will be involved in a wide broad range of initiatives to improve financial reporting and control processes across the organization.  The position requires an individual with a strong background in accounting, analysis and control.  It also requires a high degree of initiative, technical and analytical expertise, the ability to work effectively with many different areas across the organization, a solid understanding of financial processes, and a strong team orientation. This position will be an integral member of a cohesive productive team with subject matter experts. Along with regular production duties, there is an opportunity for exposure to major complex projects and transactions such as acquisitions, reorganizations and implementation of new accounting policies that impact the Manulife group, where successful execution is required on a time-sensitive basis.

Position Responsibilities:

The Manager will be involved in and support the following responsibilities of the Capital Accounting, Reporting & Control team, including but not limited to:

  • Kyriba Loan System Administration: Responsible for maintaining the Kyriba loan module, input of cash transfer data, and generation of monthly reports and monthly general ledger accounting entry feeds.
  • Intercompany Loan Accounting in the GL: Reconcile the GL to the sub-ledger, address loan-related inquiries from business units, prepare journal entries for loan-related adjustments and eliminations, and sign off on intercompany loan accounts ownership attestation.
  • FX Accounting: Prepare FX accounting entries for non-functional currency loans, investments in foreign operations, non-derivative net investment hedges, internal investment structure FX elimination, etc.
  • External Reporting and Disclosure: Prepare schedules/notes for OSFI, Corporate Tax, and quarterly/annual external financial statements.
  • SOX Control and Audit: Assist in the SOX control process and prepare necessary documents for audit purposes.
  • Project Participation: Engage in corporate projects related to capital transactions, process improvement, and new reporting requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Accounting designation (CPA)
  • Have accounting education combined with a university degree in a related discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years work experience in finance/accounting roles
  • Strong financial background, with excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated competency in project management, preferably in a financial processes context
  • Strong interpersonal, communication (verbal and written) and team-building skills including the ability to work with cross-functional and cross-divisional project teams
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently
  • Ability to manage multiple projects to balance workload
  • Strong personal computer skills with hands-on experience of Microsoft products, including Excel and Word

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with finance applications and Manulife’s financial tools including Infor GL, JETS,, Essbase, DODECA, Power BI
  • Experience in consolidation and FX accounting
  • Life insurance experience is an asset

Salary range is expected to be between

$84,375.00 CAD - $151,875.00 CAD
