About Virtru:

While the rest of the security industry obsesses over locking data down to prevent it from being lost or stolen, we're doing something fundamentally different at Virtru. We're setting data free so that you can intentionally share it with others, but without sacrificing security, privacy, or control.

We've created both a suite of powerful data protection applications and an open platform that's sparking an ecosystem of innovation. Through the Trusted Data Format (TDF) open standard, we're not just protecting data; we're creating a new paradigm where security enables sharing rather than preventing it.

Think of us as the Android of data protection: a robust platform with an open core that developers and partners can build upon, coupled with our own best-in-class applications that showcase what's possible when you reimagine security from the ground up.

Backed by Iconiq Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, Foundry Capital, and Tiger Global, we're helping Fortune 500 companies and government agencies discover that true data security means having the freedom to share, collaborate, and innovate — without compromise.

Team & Position Details:

The Benefits & Payroll Manager owns the day-to-day operational administration of all company benefit programs. This role ensures the benefits engine runs accurately and cleanly across HRIS, payroll, retirement systems, and carrier platforms, while also serving as a steady, knowledgeable resource for employees navigating benefit questions and challenges.

This is a hands-on role for someone who understands how benefits function mechanically and financially, not just administratively. The ideal candidate can reconcile deductions and contribution files, diagnose system discrepancies, and interface confidently with brokers and carriers, while also providing thoughtful, supportive guidance to employees.

This role does not set benefits strategy or lead vendor negotiations but is expected to understand plan operations deeply and escalate risk, compliance, or financial concerns appropriately.

As the Benefits & Payroll Manager, your responsibilities will include:

Benefits Operations & Systems Ownership

  • Administer all health & welfare, retirement, and ancillary benefit programs
  • Maintain accurate benefit configurations within HRIS and payroll systems
  • Ensure employee deductions and employer contributions are correctly calculated and transmitted
  • Reconcile payroll deduction files to carrier invoices and identify discrepancies
  • Audit 401(k) contributions and support timely remittance
  • Manage eligibility feeds and troubleshoot carrier file transmission issues
  • Pull, analyze, and compare reports across systems to validate data integrity
  • Diagnose root causes when discrepancies arise and resolve issues independently when appropriate
  • Escalate compliance-sensitive, financially material, or systemic issues to leadership

Broker & Vendor Interface

  • Serve as primary operational contact with benefits broker and carriers
  • Resolve claim issues, eligibility errors, billing discrepancies, and enrollment problems
  • Track open issues to resolution and ensure clean follow-through
  • Support annual open enrollment logistics and implementation of approved plan changes
  • Coordinate required filings and documentation in partnership with broker and leadership

Employee Support & Issue Resolution

  • Serve as primary point of contact for employee benefit questions
  • Provide clear, empathetic guidance during complex or sensitive situations (claims, life events, coverage issues)
  • Translate technical benefit language into practical next steps
  • Troubleshoot issues across payroll, HRIS, and carrier platforms on behalf of employees
  • Maintain professionalism and discretion in high-emotion or high-stakes situations
  • Recognize patterns in employee concerns and recommend operational improvements

Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain plan documents, notices, and required employee communications
  • Support compliance with ERISA, ACA, COBRA, Section 125, and related regulations
  • Assist with annual filings (e.g., Form 5500) and audits
  • Ensure documentation and processes meet internal control standards

Skills that will help you thrive in this role:

  • 5+ years of hands-on benefits administration experience
  • Strong understanding of health & welfare and retirement plan operations
  • Experience reconciling payroll deductions and carrier invoices
  • Ability to pull and analyze reports across HRIS, payroll, and vendor systems
  • Experience working directly with brokers and insurance carriers
  • Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills
  • Professional, steady presence when supporting employees through complex issues
  • Experience in a multi-state environment
  • Familiarity with benefits-related payroll compliance
  • HRIS and payroll system configuration experience
  • CEBS, SHRM-CP/SCP, or similar certification

What success looks like:

  • Benefit deductions, contributions, and invoices reconcile cleanly
  • Systems and carrier feeds operate accurately with minimal disruption
  • Employee issues are resolved efficiently and compassionately
  • Escalations are thoughtful, timely, and well-judged
  • Leadership has confidence that benefits operations are controlled and reliable
