Job Duties:
CLINICAL - Responsible for clinical, surgical, and post-surgical care for all species housed in the vivarium. Reports to the Attending Veterinarian and assists the veterinary technical staff in diagnosis and management of veterinary clinical cases. Oversees or supports population health and transfer of animals. Oversees the establishment and maintenance of all animal medical records on relevant species. Assists with maintenance and management of the controlled drug inventories and records set by the United States Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration.
REGULATORY - Acts as part of LAR Management Team, and deeply cares about the LAR's mission. Assists the Director of Veterinary Medicine in maintaining and developing departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and institutional policies. Participates in meetings of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Provides assistance to investigators in protocol development and consultations. Assists during the AAALAC visits and USDA inspections.
TECHNICAL - Manages assigned external and internal animal user projects, including, record maintenance, and veterinary service. Coordinates and communicates with all areas of the LAR when preparing surgery and animal treatment schedules, including making adjustments to work schedules. Responsible for timely and accurate billing information.
TRAINING - Assists in technical staff education relative to American Association of Accreditation for Lab Animal Science (AAALAS) certification and SOPs. Assists with Animal User Training Program development and administration. Assists with Surgical Proficiency Certification.
OTHER - Other duties as assigned.
Skills - Eligible for Kansas licensure within first year of employment. Customer oriented attitude. Must participate in night, weekend and holiday on-call service. Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator. Advanced computer skills. Solid verbal and written communication. Ability to multitask. Values teamwork. Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
