Central Maine Healthcare is looking for an Infusion RN to join the Oncology team!

This is a Full Time, benefits eligible position

Position Summary:

The RN, Oncology provides direct and indirect patient care in the Oncology Unit setting. Provides care that reflects initiative, flexibility and responsibility indicative of professional expectation with a minimum of supervision. Communicates with physicians/nurse manager/co-workers, as appropriate about changes in patient's clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision.

Regulatory Requirements:
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Current RN license within the state of practice.
• A minimum of one-year experience on an oncology unit.
• Verified competency in chemotherapy administration.
• IV Therapy Certification; phlebotomy skills.
• Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS Certification required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
2. Demonstrates ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes adult, geriatric patients and the general patient population.
3. Shows ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
4. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
5. Demonstrates knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
6. Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
7. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of antineoplastic therapy; physical and psychological effects, side effects, risks and benefits.
8. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of antineoplastic agents, method of administration, rate of delivery and drug properties, i.e., irritant, non-vesicant and vesicant.
9. Shows ability to calculate drug dosage and volume according to patient's age, height, weight or body surface.
10. Demonstrates thorough understanding and ability to handle antineoplastic agents following safety protocols.
11. Demonstrates the ability to start peripheral IVs and use CVAD’s.
12. Demonstrates the ability to care for patient’s pre and post radiation therapy.
13. Demonstrates the ability to care for the post surgical patient.
14. Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves in the formation of the plan of care.
15. Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services to level licensure.
16. Demonstrates ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient's response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
17. Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Family is included in teaching as appropriate. Provides emotional support.
18. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family. Communicates with the social service/discharge planner regarding both in hospital and post discharge needs.
19. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
20. Consults with other health team members/departments to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.
21. Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills.
22. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
23. Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards.
24. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
25. Documentation meets current standards and policies.
26. Operates and maintains equipment safely and correctly.
27. Orients new employees, delegates and monitors work of other staff members.
28. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education.
29. Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.
30. Communicates appropriately and clearly to Nurse Manager, co-workers and physicians.
31. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
