Head of Intermediary (External) Sales

The Head of External Sales will be responsible for developing and managing the external intermediary sales team and overall business development activities for Canada.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage staff. Provides guidance, training and motivation necessary to develop staff. Hires, evaluates and counsels crew. Follows corporate disciplinary procedures per established Vanguard standards as required. Sets performance standards, reviews performance, provides feedback, and recommends wage increases in accordance with all applicable Human Resources policies and procedures. Ensures that the sales executives are working as a team to achieve common channel goals.
  • Develops a strategic sales plan, maintains senior client relationships, and cultivates influential centers of influence in order to ensure growth of the business and maximum success within defined intermediary channels.
  • Develops and continues to improve service model for defined segment within intermediary channels. Assesses client needs and behavior as a basis for recommending service enhancements. Demonstrates initiative and creativity in developing future plans and goals for Canada.
  • Works with peers and colleagues to ensure coordination of client trends, thought leadership, and development of valuable and timely advisor solutions to the marketplace.
  • Maintains an in-depth understanding of compliance and risk, regulatory and departmental policies and procedures. Ensures the team operates within the set of guidelines.
  • Maintains an appropriate level of Vanguard and industry knowledge; keeping current on Vanguard policies and objectives; continuing to expand knowledge of the business and mutual fund and ETF industry; keeping current on the competition, including types and levels of products and services offered.
  • Participates and actively contributes to the annual business planning process and long-term strategic direction for Canada.
  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.


What it takes:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years sales management experience in the investment management industry. Intermediary sales preferred.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated executive presence, poise, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt quickly and resourcefully to changing situations while traveling for business.
  • Excellent relationship management skills.
