Program Overview:

Winter Analysts work in the Global Markets Group of BMO Capital Markets, comprising Client Coverage, Origination, Digital and Liquid Trading, Structured Products Trading, Equity Products, and Financial Resource Management. Global Markets serves institutional, corporate, and government clients.

A variety of desks host Winter Analysts including Equity Sales and Trading, Clearpool E-trading, Prime Finance, Structured Notes Sales and Trading, Leveraged Finance, Securitized Products Sales and Trading, Origination, Debt Capital Markets, and US Interest Rates Sales and Trading.

Winter co-ops will work on one desk in Global Markets over a 14-week period. With a specific role available in Calgary for the winter term, the potential candidate would work on the commodity derivatives desk in Calgary and will work alongside a team of energy professionals in fast paced and competitive environment.

Throughout the term there will be opportunities for continuous professional development activities. These activities include teach-ins, trading games, meetings with senior leaders, and networking events with both peers and Senior Leadership.

Desk Specific Description:

BMO’s Energy commodities market making desk (market maker is defined as a liquidity provider that both buys and sells tradeable assets in a given market) serves clients primarily based in Canada and the US. Four commodity market professionals are based in Calgary with additional team members across Toronto, London, New York, and San Francisco.

  • Serve clients across the energy value chain: upstream (producers), midstream (pipelines & infrastructure), downstream (refining), and end use consumers
  • Ability to transact in multiple commodities including Crude Oil, Natural Gas, and Refined Products (both financially and physically)
  • Tailor structures and products to client needs with varying complexity, including fixed price swaps, basis swaps, option structures, inventory finance and storage

Responsibilities:

Winter co-ops are fully integrated into an assigned desk, in this case the Calgary Energy Sales and Trading desk. Responsibilities will vary widely from day to day based on the needs of the business and the current market environment. Depending on the assigned desk, co-op skill set, and business needs, responsibilities may include:

  • Development and deployment of business solutions such as pricing and risk models
  • Market data capture and display, spreadsheet development
  • Providing insight into trading strategies leveraging quantitative modelling
  • Improving on existing technology involving system infrastructure, internal reporting, client/management presentations, etc.
  • Bespoke projects requiring market, portfolio, and/or client research and data analytics
  • Creating client presentation materials using PowerPoint and Excel
  • Developing client trade ideas
  • Planning/supporting client events
  • Recapping and organizing market data and events
  • Shadowing and learning from Trading, Sales, and Strategy professionals

Desk Specific Responsibilities:

Winter Co-Op term will be focused on analysis of market fundamentals as it relates to global and Canadian crude oil and gas markets, along with daily responsibilities and ad hoc projects. Fundamentals analysis will be used to inform the decision making of sales and trading as well as BMO’s clients. Specifically, the candidate will be expected to (with the help of the sales & trading teams) work on the following initiatives:

Review and organize existing models Buildout Canadian Crude data feeds using existing third-party subscriptions and web scrapes when necessary Beyond the work on energy fundamentals, the candidate will also be responsible for assisting with the maintenance and distribution of existing marketing infrastructure, pitch books, and market analysis

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or Master’s program with a graduation date of Spring 2026 or onwards
  • Strong academic record –minimum 3.4/4.0 GPA  
  • Extracurricular achievement;
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of financial and/or energy markets;
  • Excellent research and analytical skills, able to collect, analyze and interpret data;
  • Strong interpersonal skills used within a demanding team environment;
  • Demonstrated proactivity, resiliency, positive attitude and high motivation;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to attentively review, assess and provide detailed information daily on multiple projects in an organized manner;

Additional Preferred Technical Qualifications:

  • Currently working towards a degree in: Finance, Engineering, Actuarial Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Statistics;
  • Knowledge and/or experience of front-end developer languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Angular);
  • Knowledge and/or experience in back-end developer languages (C++, C#, Java, Python, VBA);
  • Knowledge and/or experience of at least one type of statistical programming language (i.e. R, MatLab);
  • Database experience (SQL, Oracle);
  • Familiarity with data manipulation and strong quantitative/statistical background;
  • Understanding of mathematical models;
  • Fluency in Excel, including scripting and efficient spreadsheet design;
  • Strong technical writing ability.

    Qualifications:

  • Able to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, investment and financial reports.
  • Strong familiarity with Outlook, Excel, Reuters Plus, Bloomberg, public finance/business news websites is desired.
