Associate Director, Corporate Strategy and Projects

Reporting to the VP, Corporate Strategy & Planning - Office of the CEO, this high caliber individual will help drive and support a variety of key strategic projects as well as strategy and planning processes. This individual will collaborate with other members of the corporate strategy and planning team as well as cross-functional stakeholders in functions across the enterprise (e.g. Commercial, Finance, etc.). This individual will contribute to meaningful projects that will not only further advance our company’s mission but will also gain real world experience at one of the most innovative organizations in the world. 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Support the CEO and VP of Corporate Strategy and Projects in planning Board meeting agendas and ensuring quality content is prepared, reviewed, and delivered for board meetings.
  • Support the CEO and VP of Corporate Strategy and Projects in planning Gilead Leadership Team (GLT) meeting agendas and ensuring quality content is prepared and quality discussions are had.
  • Drive and/or support strategic projects in alignment with overall goals and objectives of the Corporate Strategy and Projects team; includes:
    • Defining scope, objectives, and approach to assigned projects.
    • Developing and maintaining detailed work plans on assigned projects (including project tasks, clear milestones, and assignments of work project responsibilities, schedules, plans, and status reports)
    • Providing thought leadership to cross-functional stakeholders related to assigned projects.
    • Completing work products (models, frameworks, presentations, recommendations, thought pieces, etc.) for key stakeholders of assigned projects.
    • Support and consult on the development and execution of other strategic initiatives led by team members in alignment with overall organizational goals and objectives.
  • Conduct research and compose white papers on key topics related to long-term strategic interests of the company.
  • Proactively engage with cross-functional stakeholders to identify interdependencies, resolve issues, and champion strategic initiatives led by the office.

Knowledge, Experience, and Skills

  • This individual must be proactive and adept at strategy development and implementation. This must balance “staying ahead of the curve” futuristic thinking with practical realities and an ability to produce relevant work products that directly support today’s business.
  • Problem solving skills and high emotional quotient are essential.
  • Excellent presentation skills – will need to be able to communicate complex ideas in a straight-forward and digestible manner; must be excellent at thinking on feet and comfortable with being challenged on ideas. Must have strong PowerPoint skills to develop executive level slide sets.
  • Nimble and agile. Must be able to work on multiple projects with overlapping timelines and meet all deadlines.  Needs to be able to quickly digest and prioritize information.  Need to be adaptive and open to new ideas.
  • The selected candidate should understand the difference in various layers of strategy: corporate-level, disease area level, functional level, etc. term planning as well as the strategic/qualitative aspects. Prior experience participating or leading strategic planning activities is very desired.
  • Industry knowledge. Important to possess knowledge about the biotech and biopharma segment. Must know key players, their portfolios, strengths and weaknesses. Must understand key drivers of success in sector and have a point of view on these as it pertains to Gilead.
  • Gilead knowledge. Must understand (or be able to learn) our portfolio (Research, Clinical Development, and Commercial) as well as historical context of company moves.

  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Bachelor’s Degree (life sciences or business focus preferred)

Qualifications

  • BA or BS degree in business, finance or science, and 10+ years of relevant experience or a master’s degree with 8 years of relevant experience, 5 years with a PhD, is required.
  • MBA from top tier institution preferred.
  • PhD in biological or chemical sciences or MD highly valued.
  • 6+ years of relevant experience (4+ post MBA) in biotech industry in strategy or consulting
  • 3+ years at top tier consulting firm a plus.


 

The salary range for this position is: $177,905.00 - $230,230.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
