Job Purpose:

The Head of External Manufacturing- Biologics Drug Substance has full accountability for the sustainable supply of all biologics intermediates, vaccines and medicines assets within the external manufacturing portfolio. This includes lifecycle delivery from technical transfer and qualification  through to late life cycle of a number of GSK’s key assets. The role is accountable for delivering top tier performance against defined KPIs through a combination of strategic intervention and continuous improvement. Key performance measures include a clear focus on Safety, Quality Service and Cost.  Also fundamental to success includes managing and resolving all supply safety and quality risk and issues, management of service interruptions and priorities and P&L ownership for an operating budget that exceeds £500M GBP. Delivery against company critical timelines for launch/growth objectives are key for success as are global launces of key novel medicines and vaccines and controlled post-approval lifecycle changes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operational accountability for the Biologics Drug Substance external manufacturing network through life cycle activities from commercial launch, growth, and supply termination.

  • Overall accountability for business unit performance against KPIs.

  • Management of all safety/quality related risks and issues to ensure sustainable supply

  • Develop a high performing team in Biologics Drug Substance and across GSK’s Procurement Quality-Technical/MSAT-Supply cross functional matrix teams.

  • Delivery of GSK Global Supply Chain and External Manufacturing EM strategic imperatives as defined by EM2025 transformation program as well as the 2030 Global Supply Chain strategy.

  • Accountability for internal audit performance (A&A, IBM etc.)

  • Maintaining compliance against GSK standards for HR Policies, ABACS, Risk Management, P&L management, Purchasing and Supply of goods and services.

  • Key point of contact for managing GSK’s key strategic supply partners for biologics drug substance including management of disputes to minimize GSK risk and liability.

  • Delivery of new business development transactions, integrations, or assets into the Biologics Drug Substance external network.

  • Deliver a GSK Production System capability, maturity, and culture with the broader EM organization that delivers continuous improvement results across the balanced scorecard.

  • Deliver the EM Smart Manufacturing ambition to simplify, work, decision making and issue resolution.

  • Negotiated, in partnership with procurement, key supply contracts.

  • Provide full transparency of performance delivery to support senior decision makers in strategic supply chain decision making.

  • Design, develop and implement systems and ways of working for the organization including within GSK Enterprise level interactions (External R&D, Vaccines and Medicines R&D, Business Development), with our Strategy and Supply Chain planning teams as well as with external manufacturers/suppliers.

  • Provide key interface between Biologics Drug Substance team and Supply Chain / Strategy organizations to support sustainable supply chain design and execution.

  • Oversight of commercial product testing at external biopharma testing facilities. Adopting innovative technologies as defined by the GSK portfolio where external support capability does not exist

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 15 years of pharmaceutical experience with a focus on end-to-end supply chain operations

  • 10+ years’ experience within the Biopharmaceutical/Sterile manufacturing environment.

  • 5+ years working in CDMO space with BioPharma focus

  • Experience in the development and improvement in supply chain ways of working.

  • 5+ years with Senior Site leadership role(s) or Supply Chain Operations Leadership roles.

  • International experience in a diverse environment.

  • P&L ownership experience within proven performance delivery.

  • Strategy design and implementation.
