The Opportunity
Our location in Washington D.C., currently has an opportunity for a Regional Director, Government Affairs.
What You’ll Work On
Primary Function
- To support and advance Abbott’s interests before Congress, federal agencies, policymakers, and trade/business associations. Represent Abbott’s interests through the proactive advocacy of Members of Congress, staff, and federal agency officials.
- Responsible for public policy analysis and strategy formulation for Abbott businesses, with an emphasis on health care and nutrition. Candidate will help develop Abbott positions, and help lead Abbott’s efforts in influencing proposed policies, legislation, regulations, and programs.
- A successful candidate will proactively assess trends, policies, and emerging issues, and can develop and implement strategies and actions to effectively address issues that impact all Abbott businesses.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Review and analyze legislative and executive branch/regulatory activities to assess the level of impact to the company.
- Develop strategic plans and recommendations to influence legislative and agency actions, and proactively identify opportunities for Abbott in the policy-making arena.
- Develop and successfully implement action plans by working with relevant stakeholders, including business and corporate personnel, outside allies, coalitions, and trade associations.
- Advance and protect Abbott interests and reputation with key stakeholders by maintaining and developing relationships with opinion leaders and policymakers.
- Increase the business’s understanding of, and participation in, the policy-making and political process on behalf of Abbott.
Qualifications
Education: University or Bachelor’s degree required. A Master’s degree in political science, public policy, public health, or MBA/JD is a plus.
Experience:
- Five years’ minimum in positions of increasing responsibility and experience in government or government affairs.
- Involvement and success in influencing the development of policy, as well as knowledge of the political process, is required.
- Knowledge of medical device/diagnostic/nutrition areas of health care is a plus.
Competencies:
- Proven track record of policy development, negotiations, professional writing, communication, and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects under deadline pressure.
- Proven ability to interface well with key policymakers, major association policy teams, and executives.
- Strong skills in understanding the intent of legislation or proposed policies/guidelines/regulation and the ability to assess the extent to which such legislation or regulations support or conflict with Abbott’s positions or interests.
- Recognized team player who seeks to become an integral part of an industry-leading government affairs group.
- Strong ability to communicate, synthesize key government issues, develop strategy and persuade constituencies towards specific actions and initiatives.
- Proven ability to drive for results, motivate and positively influence individuals both inside and outside of the organization.
- Demonstrated evidence of strong organizational skills, adept at managing complex array of projects/issues.
- Requires some domestic travel.

$125,300.00 – $250,700.00
