The Role: 

The Strategy & Business Development Director is a key role at Generate and will define and execute on high-priority, high-impact strategy, new product planning, business development and alliance management opportunities across the company.  

A successful candidate thrives in ambiguity and is capable of setting and driving their own agenda towards actionable outcomes. This person possesses a strong combination of analytical thinking and interpersonal skills, is able to broadly and thoughtfully engage internal and external stakeholders across disciples to drive outcomes. They demonstrate excellent strategic and structured thinking, effective and prioritized analytics to support decisions, top-tier communication skills, curiosity for our science and our scientists and an ability to quickly build trust broadly.  

This role offers an unparalleled opportunity for professional impact and growth within the biotech industry. The position will be based out of our headquarters in Somerville, MA with an onsite presence expected. 

Here's how you will contribute:

  • Execute high-priority, high-impact strategy projects independently and cross-functionally with other parts of the Generate:Biomedicines organization (e.g., R&D, Platform, Finance) 
  • Develop robust program strategies as a New Product Planning representative, including defining target product profiles and value proposition of our programs with the Program Lead and leading the strategic planning of our assets (financial valuations, BD opportunities, Competitive intelligence)   
  • Develop compelling communications and materials to convey our scientific and program value propositions for business development and partnership conversations (including potential investor discussions), including being the ‘scientific translator’ for the business functions within Generate.
  • Build trust-based relationships across the scientific teams, which helps to frame scientific strategy as a partner within the organization.  
  • Support the corporate and business development operations (including where needed helping with targets and engagement tracking, engagement preparation).
  • Establish and evaluate value implications of potential corporate development and strategic decisions including financial analysis such as NPV and IRR.  

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 12+ years, Master’s degree with 10+ years, or Ph.D with 8+ years of professional experience, with at least 5+ of those years in BD within a biotech or pharma, or preferably both. Life science consulting background is also a plus.
  • Proven track record of executing complex strategy projects. 
  • Experience in some major aspects of the business development function (i.e., deal sourcing, engaging externally, negotiations, alliance management).  
  • Curious, sharp business acumen with strong structured analytic and communication skills.  
  • Results-driven, action-oriented high-performer with highly collaborative style; able to influence and build consensus across all levels of the organization.  
  • Strong financial toolkit (e.g., experience in NPV/DCF modeling)
  • Highly self-motivated with demonstrated agility to multitask, manage time, handle uncertainty, and work under pressure with limited oversight. 
  • Excellent computer skills, especially PowerPoint and Excel required.
