Job Description Summary
The Controller department is seeking an analytical and highly motivated individual to perform the full range of advanced accounting activities in support of assuring timely and accurate general accounting records. The department supports GAAP and Statutory financial reporting, including financial statements, disclosures, analysis, and various regulatory filings.  
As a Principal Accountant, you will perform complex accounting activities for financial, regulatory and management reporting, and preparing account analyses and reconciliations. In addition to recurring responsibilities, you will be responsible for assisting in automation projects and leading other accounting level associates through their deliverables. 

Location
This hybrid role involves on-site presence 3 days per week at our Chevy Chase, MD office location.

Responsibilities:
•    Preparation of journal entries into the accounting system which includes obtaining appropriate support and performing calculations for the entries. 
•    Preparation of account reconciliations and conduct detailed balance sheet account reviews that will support process improvement and standardization. 
•    Assist with continuous improvement, automation, and internal control initiatives in support of corporate strategies, which includes driving automation of certain accounting tasks. 
•    Assist with guiding and training other accounting staff members
•    Support special projects, initiatives, and ad-hoc requests. 


Basic Qualifications:
•    Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or another related field
•    At least four years of experience in public accounting or an applicable corporate accounting environment
•    Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
•    Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment
•    Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines
•    Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
•    Ability to learn and apply technical accounting and procedural information. 
•    Ability to work in a fast paced, changing environment with competing priorities.
•    Overtime is required during peak periods
•    Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, VBA)


Preferred Qualifications:
•    CPA license
•    Experience designing and maintaining proper internal control structure
•    Experience in effectively leading cross function teams in support of organizational and continuous improvement projects
•    Previous experience with insurance accounting
•    Familiarity with Workday Financials general ledger application
•    Experience using Cadency and PowerBI
•    Familiarity with accounting systems and automation projects
