Job Description

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Associate Structured Cabling Engineer, Information Technology [R0144100].

ROLE of the POSITION

The Network Development and Engineering (NDE) unit of the Office of Information Technology (OIT) is seeking an Associate Structured Cabling Engineer to support UNLV’s structured cable plant and related projects.  The Associate Structured Cabling Engineer will report to the Senior Structured Cabling Engineer - Supervisor and work closely with the Network Development and Engineering team, UNLV Planning and Construction (P&C) team, low-voltage contractors, and low-voltage manufacturers.  

The Associate Structured Cabling Engineer will assist with facilitating, preparing, and auditing structured cabling plant-related project documentation to UNLV cabling specifications such as architectural drawings, specification manuals, and low-voltage construction project checklists. This position will maintain the infrastructure-management software that documents the inside/outside fiber and copper cabling plants. The Associate Structured Cabling Engineer will install IDF network equipment in projects requiring equipment installation. The person holding this position will consult with internal and external clients as requested to gather requirements.

The position will participate in a weekly on-call rotation and respond to and schedule network outages outside of business hours.

MINIMUM & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and a minimum of 1 year working with structured cabling and performing basic networking tasks. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.

Preferred Certifications: BICSI Installer I, IIC, IIF, or III, BICSI RCDD, Project Management Certification, Low-voltage Manufacturers Certification, A+, Network +.   

KNOWLEDGE

Required

  • Knowledge of the OSI physical layer

  • Familiarity with blown fiber practices and installation techniques

  • Familiarity of TIA/EIA Structured Cabling System standards and NEC (National Electrical Code)

  • Familiarity with network switch configurations

  • Familiarity with wireless networks

    

Preferred

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD

  • Familiarity with OSP, vault, and manhole design guidelines

  • Knowledge of copper and fiber certification equipment

  • Knowledge of customer service principles and procedures 

SKILLS

Required

  • Demonstrated organization and documentation capabilities

  • Demonstrated network troubleshooting

  • Familiarity with Google Workspace applications (eg. Docs, Sheets, Drive)

  • Interpersonal skills in communication and team building

  • Usage of basic hand tools for accessing boxes, cabinets, and cable pathways

  • Wi-Fi access point mounting and installation (indoor and outdoor)

  • Configuration of copper and fiber certification equipment 

  • Experience installing structured cabling and pathway infrastructures

SALARY RANGE

Salary range is $76,700 to $79,000. Unable to offer more than stated salary range.
