Position Summary

The Data Analyst, Direct Marketing supports the development, execution, and analysis of sophisticated, multi-channel outreach/solicitation campaigns aimed to drive alumni donor participation, build lifetime loyalty, and raise maximum spendable dollars for WashU’s top Annual Fund priorities. This role is primarily responsible for audience management protocols, segmentation strategies, and the manipulation and organization of large data sets used to carryout direct marketing campaigns. They will develop and implement systems for comprehensive analysis of appeal and Annual Fund performance, audience behavior, and other key metrics.

The Data Analyst will be a member of the department’s Data Analytics teaming, reporting to the Executive Director of Data & Analytics. The Data Analyst will partner closely with the Director of Engagement & Annual Giving Programs (EAGP), Associate Director of Direct Marketing Projects, and other University Advancement colleagues.

The incumbent possesses exceptional technical and data management abilities, advanced analytical skills, and a deep understanding of industry standards. Furthermore, they identify business opportunities, assess their impact, and foster ongoing communication with University Advancement colleagues, constituents, and stakeholders.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Audience and Segmentation Management

  • In partnership with EAGP: develop segmentation strategies for direct marketing campaigns; establish and maintain standard operating procedures for audience inclusion/exclusion scenarios; design and incorporate A/B testing and strategic data elements in appeals such as segment-specific text variables, designation listings, ask strings, etc.

Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Manage Salesforce CRM database “campaigns” object and gift source code process.
  • Develop and present standardized reporting for real-time appeal performance.
  • Track, analyze, and report ongoing donor behavior, outcomes of data variables/testing, and other trends.
  • Deliver regular review of key performance indicators and annual giving metrics.
  • Provide strategic analysis of year-over-year campaign outcomes and design recommendations for future segmentation and testing strategies.

Data Operations

  • Write/pull data queries and review output files for accuracy and reliability.
  • Manipulate data files and finalize datasets for use by mail-house vendor or digital marketing platform.
  • Ensure data viability, proof data merge (print) samples and test (digital) merge variables; troubleshoot and resolve any data-related issues.
  • Ensure constituent record data integrity, monitor data issues and errors, and submit data change requests.

Other Functions

  • Participate in strategic planning efforts and direct marketing schedule development.
  • Research industry best practices for annual giving direct mail, data segmentation, and donor participation.
  • Collaborate with UA colleagues on programs and projects that overlap with those stated above.
  • Assist, as necessary, with Engagement and Annual Giving Programs and other relevant University Advancement events and campaigns.
  • Undertake additional projects or perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range

$65,900.00 - $112,700.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
