Job Description
The Dean of Arts and Sciences serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the Division of Arts and Sciences at Great Basin College (GBC). The Dean provides strategic leadership to ensure high-quality instruction, effective program delivery, student success, and operational excellence across disciplines including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, general education, developmental education, and other areas as assigned.
The Dean collaborates closely with department chairs, faculty, staff, and external partners to advance the mission of GBC and support the educational needs of the college’s service area.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in an Arts and Sciences discipline from a regionally accredited institution
Demonstrated leadership experience in higher education (e.g., department chair, program director, associate dean, or similar role)
Experience with program assessment, accreditation processes, and curriculum development
Supervisory and budget management experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Earned doctorate in an Arts and Sciences discipline
Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in higher education teaching and/or administration
Experience conducting faculty performance reviews
Responsibilities
1. Academic Leadership & Program Quality
Provide leadership and collaboration with department chairs and faculty to support effective delivery of classes and programs.
Monitor academic quality of all courses and programs, including general education and developmental education.
Lead program planning and program assessment reviews.
Lead assessments of student learning outcomes and departmental needs.
Collaborate with department chairs and faculty to develop new programs and services for the GBC service area.
Provide leadership for the alignment of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs student pathway supports, as appropriate.
Participate in coordination of class schedules and instructor workloads for optimal program delivery.
2. Faculty & Staff Supervision
Lead full-time faculty performance review processes.
Participate in performance reviews of part-time faculty.
Participate in recruitment of full-time and part-time faculty, as needed.
Recruit, supervise, and assess the performance of departmental support staff.
Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to resolve conflicts.
3. Student Success, Recruitment & Enrollment Support
Conduct focused student recruitment activities in cooperation with faculty and the recruiting office.
Coordinate efficient advisement and registration procedures for program students.
Serve as liaison between the GBC Foundation and the Financial Aid Department to manage scholarships.
Lead expectations across all departments and work collaboratively with the Dual Credit Coordinator for successful dual and concurrent enrollment programming.
4. Budget, Facilities & Resource Management
In cooperation with department chairs, develop and manage operating budgets for departments.
Collaborate with other functional offices to properly equip and maintain physical facilities for Arts and Sciences programs.
Participate in grant development activities, as appropriate.
5. Institutional Leadership & External Relations
Represent GBC at state and national meetings, associations, and conferences as deemed necessary and approved by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Participate on college, NSHE, and other committees, as appropriate.
Maintain collaborative relationships across institutional divisions to ensure operational effectiveness.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Compensation Grade
Administrative Faculty – E
This is a 12 month "A" contract position, 12 month contracts are used for year round programs.
The budgeted salary range for this position is $141,254-$146,000
Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity and budgets.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee’s spouse or domestic partner.

Newly hired faculty must assure that their official transcripts are sent by the degree granting institution(s) to Great Basin College Human Resources Office within 30 days from the effective date of employment. Regionally accredited institutions must have awarded academic degrees.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Any expense related to the evaluation will be the responsibility of the candidate.
