At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security and human spaceflight.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will be responsible for championing mass properties process and tools improvements, relentlessly focusing on value and seeking to eliminate waste in our processes and tools whenever possible. You will also execute mass properties management on one or more engines programs.  Your engagement spans all program phases, from conceptual design, through development, production, deployment, and post-flight.  This work will require close partnership with other enterprise engineers in mass properties, manufacturing, quality, cost, and software development. Your ability to partner and earn trust with folk across the organization is essential to our success.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform mass control, analysis, verification, data management, and documentation for one or more engine program.
  • Deliver accurate mass properties calculations throughout the program lifecycle – done with and without the aid of 3D CAD models
  • Define mass properties allocations in collaboration with subsystem/component teams
  • Support decision-making on design and manufacturing trades
  • Identify and actively manage mass risks and opportunities for the engine, partnering with component design engineers
  • Regularly forecast engine system mass, using your deep, personal understanding of engine component designs and their development maturity
  • Own mass properties verification plan - driving execution of these activities, developing rationale for when to weigh parts and when to rely solely on analysis
  • Create weight and balance procedures to measure mass, center of gravity, and moments of inertia, as needed.
  • Identify mass properties process and tools improvement needs and develop an improvement roadmap.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical, aerospace engineering, or a relevant technical degree
  • 7+ years of experience in aerospace engineering or complex electromechanical systems
  • 4+ years in mass properties engineering with aerospace or complex electro-mechanical products
  • Expertise in technical fundamentals of mass engineering, calculations, forecasting, and reporting
  • Expertise with mass properties control processes, including identifying and resolving mass property threats and opportunities
  • Significant experience developing and improving mass properties process and tool chains
  • Expertise in systems engineering practices and configuration management
  • Extensive computer skills including MS Excel, MATLAB, and CAD (Creo preferred)
  • Experience weighing aerospace parts and complex assemblies
  • Demonstrated ability to earn trust, develop collaborative professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Demonstrated experience pulling teams together to solve complex system problems
  • Excellent technical writing and presentation skills
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years working in aerospace engineering field
  • 7+ years in mass properties engineering with aerospace or complex electro-mechanical products
  • Working knowledge or experience with liquid rocket engine components or similarly complex mechanical and electronics
  • Experience with Confluence, JIRA (including writing JQL filters), use of Kanban boards, and managing projects using SCRUM
  • Knowledge of rocket engine and space vehicle operation
  • Experience managing mass properties per ANSI/AIAA S-120 (2015)
  • Experience developing Monte Carlo code and performing analyses
  • Experience integrating mass controls in a production manufacturing environment
  • Experience with Creo & Windchill
