Your New Role…

The Privacy Legal team brings together a global team of legal and privacy professionals to drive WBD’s consumer-first global privacy strategy. The Privacy & Data Strategy Legal team helps WBD’s global workforce comply with privacy and data-related legal requirements, provide personalized and innovative consumer experiences that meet business goals, and build consumer trust by embedding privacy-by design into products and initiatives and maintaining transparency, control, and optionality around data use.

The Counsel, International Privacy advises business and technology stakeholders on a range of consumer and employee privacy and information security issues, including counselling on compliance with Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), ePrivacy Directive, other privacy laws in the EMEA, APAC and LatAm regions, and global governance and compliance programs.  

This person will work with established brands such as Warner Bros., CNN, our core streaming service (Max), and on emerging technology, and cutting-edge business models in entertainment, news, sports, games, and ad-tech. The role will partner with teams across WBD Legal, Technology, and business teams in the EMEA and APAC region and will work on global projects. 

Your Role Accountabilities…

  • Primary supporting role on core consumer data privacy matters enabling product launches, revenue-generating projects, BAU operations and risk management in WBD’s flagship streaming service (Max) and all other consumer brands, web and mobile properties, such as CNN, TVN, Discovery+, WB Games, Harry Potter and Eurosport. Acting as escalation point for individual rights request issues, privacy activist and consumer complaints, providing legal advice to key Tech stakeholders (GPS and CAKE) and CS teams on operating individual rights processes and systems.

  • Supporting Employment Legal and P&C on employee data privacy matters. This includes: employee monitoring issues, background checks, data privacy aspects of employee disputes, data protection aspects of Diversity & Inclusion projects, benefits issues, benefits vendor agreements, and general P&C queries; reviewing Artificial Intelligence use cases involving employee data and advising on mitigations. Supporting responses to employee Data Subject Access Requests (including complex issues connected to employee disputes, in close collaboration with Employment Legal, and working with Director, International Privacy - and VP Legal, Privacy & Data Strategy on high-risk matters).

  • Assist with updating and maintaining consumer and workforce privacy policies; Assist with responding to data security incidents, where required; Assist with developing and delivering data protection training to WBD employees and group companies; Assist with global Privacy Controls Framework, assurance and audits.

  • Conduct legal analysis and research on data privacy laws around the world and maintain legal knowhow; create and comment on drafts of legal documentation including policies, guidelines, contracts, training materials and communication; support and oversee the completion of data protection impact assessments and other internal compliance documentation such as the Intra-group Agreement; analyzing data types and flows across the business (systems, processes and vendors), and how these relate to policy and regulatory requirements; work with local counsel where required to obtain advice, and manage compliance issues and documentation. If required, reviewing, negotiating and amending vendor agreements for compliance with GDPR requirements.

Qualifications & Experience…

  • Must be qualified as a UK solicitor or equivalent European legal practice qualification.

  • Preferably law firm experience but could be in-house provided you have undergone rigorous training.

  • Excellent negotiation, contract and other formal document drafting skills.

  • Strong advisory skills in consumer and/or employee data privacy, digital advertising, marketing, consumer protection and other related topics, familiarity with ad tech, data governance and information security a plus.

  • Knowledge of IP, commercial contract and adjacent legal experience desirable.

  • Entertainment industry and/or technology experience a plus.

Hybrid Working - This role is advertised as a Hybrid work model, that combines remote and in-office work, following our current company policy and to be agreed with your Line Manager. Subject to any applicable laws, WBD / your Line Manager reserves the right to change this working agreement where this is essential to business needs and upon reasonable notice to you.
