About the Team:
The Legal department has deep expertise in all core practice areas relevant to a global media and information company, including labor and employment, commercial agreements across all our businesses, privacy, intellectual property, M&A, litigation, corporate governance, compliance, media law and a variety of other specialties. The team is also responsible for the company's compliance program, including screening for compliance with international sanctions, enforcement of company policies—such as the Dow Jones Code of Conduct—and bolstering internal systems and controls.
About the Role:
The Privacy Counsel is part of our global privacy function and this role will be based in London, UK. The lawyer in this role will assist with our global privacy function initiatives such as privacy awareness, accountability, and compliance, and will also directly support the business on compliance with current and developing rules and regulations involving privacy and data protection. The position will report to the Dow Jones Chief Privacy Officer based in NYC, US. This position is based in London, with the potential for regional/EU and US travel.
You Will:
- Foster a culture of data protection within the organization and help to develop, implement and/or maintain essential elements of the global privacy program, such as data protection impact assessments (DPIAs), data protection by design and by default, records of processing activities, privacy playbooks, the data subjects' rights response process, privacy awareness training, notification and communication of data breaches;
- Inform, advise and issue recommendations to the Company regarding compliance with applicable privacy and data protection laws and regulations, and relevant Company policies and guidelines;
- Work closely with internal stakeholders in the review of new products, services and initiatives, often involving novel technologies, to ensure compliance with data protection laws. Confirm that sound protocols are in place to mitigate privacy risks unique to such technologies;
- Identify and manage risks related to data protection, and escalate data protection risks and issues as needed;
- Maintain updated knowledge of legal and regulatory developments that are relevant to the business, including in direct marketing and online privacy;
- Advise on and negotiate privacy and data protection terms in commercial contracts with business partners and vendors, including data processing agreements and data transfer agreements; and
- Attend regular/ongoing privacy training.
You Have:
- At least 8 years PQE qualified lawyer with a license to practice in England and Wales. A minimum of 4 years of experience in a data privacy / data protection function;
- Experience navigating or operating within global data protection laws and requirements, including extensive knowledge of the details and practical application of international data protection legislation;
- Experience implementing data protection policies, procedures, and training materials, and promoting a culture of data protection compliance across business functions;
- A team player with great stakeholder management skills who can effectively collaborate and build relationships with lawyers and business clients throughout the organization.
- Curiosity to learn about emerging privacy laws, new technologies and areas of risk;
- Experience in the media and/or compliance industry, and with marketing operations, preferred;
Preferred Qualifications
- CIPP (Certified Information Privacy Professional) preferred.
- A second language is advantageous but not required.
- Familiarity in technical privacy review preferred.
