The Polsinelli Healthcare Law Fellowship was established as a collaboration between the University of Kansas, the University of Kansas Health System and the Polsinelli firm to support and promote career advancement to those interested in leadership and legal issues facing health care in major research universities and academic medical centers, including but not limited to advancing health law policy, public health, privacy, HIPAA and other regulatory and compliance matters, transactional issues, new legislation and amendments to existing legislation impacting healthcare policy, medical liability and informed consent issues, health economics, bioethics and a wide range of issues relating to research, clinical practice and human trials. Job Description:

The University of Kansas’ Office of the General Counsel in partnership with the University of Kansas Health System and the nationally-recognized firm of Polsinelli is pleased to invite third-year law students and recent law school graduates to apply to the Polsinelli Healthcare Law Fellowship Program. 

The Polsinelli Healthcare Law Fellowship grants extraordinary access into the legal life of the University of Kansas and the University of Kansas Health System, providing an unparalleled opportunity to work closely with General Counsel attorneys on the University’s Medical Center campus and in the University of Kansas Health System environment.  Under the guidance and supervision of licensed attorneys, the law fellow will assume responsibility for a diverse range of legal matters, conduct important health care-related research and, following Kansas licensure, will advise and provide legal guidance directly to administration, faculty, staff and students.

The healthcare law fellow will be directly involved in most areas of the legal department’s work and will be actively supervised by attorneys in the University’s Office of the General Counsel and by attorneys in the University of Kansas Health System while the fellow studies for and successfully passes the Kansas Bar Examination.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Engage directly with KUMC administration and KU Health System administration, faculty members and staff in issues that may facilitate the need for legal counsel or representation
  • Engage in Polsinelli firm-sponsored networking events and professional development opportunities
  • Conduct healthcare-related research and review of health law policy, public health issues, privacy, HIPAA and other regulatory and compliance matters
  • Advise on transactional issues, legislative matters impacting healthcare policy, medical liability and informed consent issues, health economics, bioethics and a wide range of issues pertaining to clinical practice and human trials as directed under the guidance and supervision of an Associate General Counsel attorney or higher
  • Engage and participate in University of Kansas and University of Kansas Health System meetings as requested

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a J.D. from an ABA accredited school by June 1, 2025.
  • Strong academic credentials as confirmed by academic transcript (cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better).
  • Membership in Kansas bar,or pending application for admission within 12 months of hire.

Comprehensive Benefits Package:

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
