Capital Power is seeking an ambitious Operations Manager to lead and coordinate our operations staff. Reporting to the Plant Manager, this role ensures flawless operation, maintenance, and compliance of our Midland Cogeneration Venture (MCV) facility, serving as the hands, eyes, and ears of the plant.

As an integral part of the leadership team, the Operations Manager oversees the day-to-day operation’s activities, maintains environmental compliance and ensures that the facility is operated in a safe, reliable, and economic manner consistent with applicable legislation, corporate policy, and best practice.

This role’s responsibilities include daily schedule execution, work permit/LOTO requests, shutdown preparation, administrating performance management, in conjunction with their team leaders, and completing routine inspections of work sites and work practices to ensure the safe and effective completion of operations activities.

You will contribute to our team by:

  • Coordinating with representatives of key contract holders to ensure all steam and electric dispatch requirements.

  • Providing input and support in the development of the annual budget and annual operating plans.

  • Translating company and plant goals into tactical plans and objectives.

  • Setting high and challenging productivity and quality standards; encouraging new ideas and methods to lower costs and improve efficiency, quality and safety.

  • Leading daily Operational activities, prioritizing resources effectively, and addressing any operational concerns promptly.

  • Evaluating and acting upon suggestions for improving safety, equipment reliability, crew efficiency, and operational procedures.

  • Providing the shutdown group all necessary support during planned outages.

  • Ensuring team members are completing cyclical training.

  • Ensures systems in place to monitors inventory levels of chemicals and consumables related to operations to assure adequate supplies are available to maintain operations.

  • Planning and controlling group expenditures to control costs and provide for the availability of resources.

  • Preparing operations budget for the group; projecting and controlling work group expenditures to maintain compliance with budgeted funds.

  • Directing outage planning and scheduling to ensure detailed investigation and determination of material needs and workforce requirements, as related to the Operations department.

  • Evaluating contract work for best value for the company.

  • Leading Team and Safety meetings, ensuring agenda items are addressed and issues are resolved.

  • Resolving personnel or work-related problems promptly and fairly, providing performance feedback to employees.

  • Providing direct reports with well-defined job expectations, ongoing performance feedback and accurate appraisal of performance.

  • Coordinating the troubleshooting process to resolve plant issues and monitoring plant performance.

  • Implementing standard work management processes and procedures.

  • Developing and implementing long-range Operational planning to assure the reliable and efficient operation of station equipment.

  • Ensuring safe work practices and procedures are observed.

  • Making specialized, technical decisions in support of plant operations.

  • Coordinating and directing response actions to plant and site emergencies.

  • Ensuring facility environmental and safety compliance and prepare required reports.

  • Directing plant lockout-tagout program

  • Developing and/or retiring standard operating procedures that guide operators on safety and environmental compliance.

  • Ensuring contractors are following site safety requirements, and act as site contact for contractors ensuring they are following site Safety Policies.

  • Coordinating and leading all aspects of preventive/predictive maintenance activities, as performed by the operations department.

  • Maintaining a productive and motivated staff through sound human resource management and the enforcement of personnel policies.

  • Providing feedback and oversight to inventory personnel in order to ensure proper tools and materials are available to keep the plant running at an optimum level.

  • Developing and implementing facility training programs for the operations personnel, including cross training of facility staff, to create a more flexible and productive plant environment.

What you will bring to the role:    

Education:

  • Completed 4-year bachelor’s degree in a related field (i.e.: business, commerce, engineering, etc.).

  • Other equivalencies may be considered, such as substantial experience paired with an Associate's Degree (AA) or its equivalent from a two-year college or technical school.

Skills and Experience:

  • Four (4) to six (6) years related experience leading (or assisting leading) at a power generation site, preferably at combined cycle power plant. Heavy industrial plant experience may be considered.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of all facets of power plant operations.

  • Demonstrates the ability to make competent decisions in emergency situations.

  • Capable of writing operations procedures, work requests, and purchase requisitions.

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, electrical one-lines, logic drawings, technical manuals and Piping & Instrument Drawings.

  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Acts as a role model for quality work, safety and work ethic.

  • Ability to perform root cause analysis and reporting.

Working Conditions:

  • Heavy industrial facility designated as a safety sensitive location.

  • After hours on-call component.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and stairs.

Additional Details:

The pay range for this position is $121,680 to $140,608.  The specific rate will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and prior relevant experience. 

This position is eligible for health care benefits, retirement benefits, paid time off, and annual bonus.

As this is a safety sensitive position, clearance of a pre-employment drug test is required, subject to applicable law.
