Summary/Job Purpose:

Responsible for the oversight of complex and litigated claims. This includes direction and oversight of investigation, evaluation, reserving and overall handling of complex and litigated claims.  Ensures compliance with the MSIG Claim Handling and Litigation Management Guidelines and all Regulatory requirements.  Assists with the overall management of complex claim matters focusing on providing high quality, cost effective resolutions and litigation management.

Essential Functions:

Percentage of Time:

  • Performs supervisory claim reviews as required by MSIG Claim Handling Guidelines to insure adherence by the staff with the MSIG guidelines and all jurisdictional compliance requirements.
  • Reviews new loss or claim notices and makes assignments for handling to appropriate claim representative.
  • Manages, controls and negotiates timely and equitable claim payments and settlements in accordance with jurisdictional requirements, fair claim practices and MSMM Claim handling Guidelines.
  • Establishes and authorizes timely and adequate case reserves within delegated reserve/settlement authority.  Provides appropriate recommendations to management where reserve evaluation exceeds delegated authority.
  • Accountable for ensuring compliance with MSIG Litigation and Billing Guidelines, use of approved panel counsel.
  • Supervises and reviews the performance of all outside counsel; provides analysis and recommendation to Claim Manager and Home Office.
  • Responsible for maintenance of the office suit log, resolution of disputes with outside counsel, and timely payment of legal bills.
  • Oversees Legal Cost Containment initiatives working internal and external resources.
  • Works with Claim management to develop and implement initiatives to reduce claim inventory through various key initiatives, such as settlement or cost effective litigation strategies. 
  • Direct, guides and develops staff handling complex and litigated claims, including providing ongoing performance feedback and coaching, to maximize individual contributions to achieve desired business results within the department and company.
  • Participates in special projects and assignments as needed.

Education and Experience Required: 

Diploma/Degree & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.   
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in claims handling and management, emphasis on litigation management skills
  • 3+ years managements experience
