Job Description:

Candidates must be eligible for Reliability Status Clearance, which requires that they have lived and worked in Canada for the past 5 consecutive years.  No exceptions, please. 

Job Summary:

The candidate will be a member of a team within Data Management Services (DMS) called Distributed Database Infrastructure (DDI). The primary role will be as part of the Security sub-team within DDI. The Security sub-team provides operational security oversight for MS SQL Server, Oracle DB, AWS RDS and AWS cloud database services supported by the DMS department. Security oversight duties include stewardship of the Thales Imperva SecureSphere environment, internal security initiatives affecting DMS etc. Segregation of duties from a security perspective are fully in place so he or she will work closely with the infrastructure and client DBAs when required.

What will you do:

  • Operational custodian of all aspects of the Imperva SecureSphere Database Activity Monitoring (DAM) and Vulnerability Assessment (VA) infrastructure
  • Work closely with team members, technical/team leads, management, specialized IT areas and application support teams to ensure consistent delivery and quality of database services
  • Establish, implement security best practices within the database environment. This includes but is not limited to hardening scripts, audit documents, compliance filings, etc.
  • Monitor the database environment for adherence to security standards
  • Participate and contribute to projects throughout the project lifecycle
  • Work with Database Administrators or Developers in defining requirements
  • Performance analysis, monitor, troubleshoot and resolve issues within Guardium security suite
  • Support project development following documented standards, policies and procedures (Change Management Process)
  • Automate and improve infrastructure as code release processes
  • Develop platform specific stored procedures, functions and scripts to support internal processes and improve system security
  • Evaluate the functionality and features within database support products
  • Contribute ideas for best practice improvements, process improvement, and innovative solutions
  • Occasional participation in after-hours and weekend support of production implementations, infrastructure activities, and various disaster recovery exercises

What do you need to succeed:

  • University degree in Computer Science or related information technology degree/diploma
  • Industry security certification such as CISSP or CRISC
  • Strong understanding of database, data security principles and database concepts
  • Knowledge of security frameworks, tools and methodologies, Microsoft PowerShell or other platform specific scripting tool
  • Experience and Certification of functions and features of a major DBMS (Oracle DB, MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, DB2, AWS RDS, etc.)
  • Skills with Imperva SecureSphere and VA tools or similar toolkits
  • Experience Administering Intrusion Prevention, Privilege Identity Management (PIM), or SIEM systems
  • Ability to understand database architectures that supports business requirements and define a work breakdown structure
  • Lead projects that involve others to deliver on database initiatives
  • Excellent communication skills [oral and written]
  • Organizational skills to handle several tasks efficiently and escalate to manager when issues arise
  • Ability to define and execute on proof-of-concept initiatives
  • Passion for database administration and security as a career
  • Knowledge and experience in incident management and security investigations
  • Experience securing Hadoop environments, monitoring diverse environments such as Oracle, MS-SQL, DB2/Z, IMS, especially in relation to Guardium
  • Understanding of data-mapping and logical and physical data modeling

The database teams in the DMS area have members in Canada, the US and India supporting a wide range of distributed applications. All team members must have the ability to provide 24x7 rotational on-call duties, after hour change support and support disaster recovery test weekends. The eligible candidate will be required to carry a cell phone, laptop and provide guaranteed coverage from home on a rotational basis.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
