Role Overview: As an Engineer II - Grid Operations, you'll tackle a diverse range of engineering challenges, from moderate to complex, all aimed at designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining energy structures, systems, and equipment. You'll play a crucial role in supporting the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization of energy for commercial, residential, and industrial customers. This position involves active participation in multi-functional teams, providing mentorship to junior colleagues, and contributing to critical initiatives that shape our energy landscape.

** This is a hybrid position that will require travel to our locations in Beaver Dam, WI and Sheboygan, WI OR to Portage, WI and Baraboo, WI.

What you will do

  • Follow safety rules and practices. Strive to identify problems and solutions and make safety suggestions to assist in maintaining a safe work environment. Use tools and standards to design safety into operating and maintaining equipment.

  • Maintain an awareness of customer needs and expectations and propose solutions. Be proactively involved in the identification and solution of problems falling within assigned area of responsibility.

  • Apply regulatory and organizational engineering standards; make recommendations for changing processes and procedures.

  • Develop and apply knowledge of electric utility system operations and maintenance practices with a focus on reliability and resiliency, including risk assessment. Make low- to medium-risk decisions that involve direct application of technical knowledge with minimal guidance from supervisor.

  • Maintain communication and relationships with colleagues, business unit customers, and contractors. Be comfortable discussing technical issues with others from non-technical backgrounds.

  • Explain technical problems to internal customers and accurately prepare detailed documents such as technical studies and project documentation.

  • Frequently use critical thinking skills necessary to develop recommendations which provide technically sound and highly efficient solutions for specific problems.

  • Learn and participate in the departmental budgeting and planning processes. Develop, with limited guidance, solutions to system problems including moderately complex scopes of work with cost estimates and sequences. Learn the basics of the property unit catalog and the difference between capital investments and O&M spend.

  • Perform or support detailed engineering design and specification of protective microprocessor relay schemes, devices, and settings to ensure protection of distribution and generation systems. Be responsible for performing power system studies, system protection settings coordination, and SCADA programming on various projects (up to 345-kV voltage level).

  • Perform root cause analysis of system disturbances and outages; provide technical support for corrective actions to enhance system reliability.

  • Engage in other duties as needed that support Alliant Energy’s Values; help deliver on our Purpose to serve customers and build stronger communities.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university through the Engineering Accreditation Commission. Electrical Engineering degree with power emphasis is preferred.

  • 2 years of related experience.
