The institutional channel works directly with plan sponsors, consulting partners and group advisory market for DC plans, and affiliated asset managers for DB plans, Insurance channel, Foundations and Endowments. We also work very closely with our partners in Sun Life GRS and their rollover business, which are important distribution channels for the institutional business. Retail channels include IIROC, MFDA and MGA market.

As a result of internal role change, we are seeking to fill the position of Director, Institutional Business Development and Client Relationships, Ontario. The mandate of this role is to lead institutional relationships, service institutional clients and undertake business development efforts in the Ontario market.   

This role is located in Toronto. The candidate will report directly to the Head of Institutional Business for SLGI (located in Montreal).

What will you do:

Business planning and support

  • Support colleagues in building annual strategic plan and establishing objectives and key results indicators for the region.
  • Execute on the strategic plan, while driving accountability for regional results.
  • Pivot with business needs and lead sales, relationship and retention initiatives for the region.
  • Track emerging markets trends and factoring them in the annual strategic plan.

Business Development and Relationship Management

  • Increase visibility and awareness of SLGI in the Ontario marketplace
  • Establish firm’s Unique Value Proposition in the market
  • Identify, develop and close new business opportunities.  
  • Collaborate with distribution channel partners in furthering progress on annual objectives
  • Keep clients and key partners abreast of new product developments/ changes and new solutions.
  • Build cross-functional partnership with functions like such as Multi Asset Solutions team, Marketing, Product etc. to drive business development efforts and identify positioning gaps.
  • Enhance client servicing framework to foster a service excellence culture for clients and key external and internal partners
  • Work with regional field consultants and internal partners in completing inbound client or intermediary requests.
  • Undertake regional webinars, presentations and social events to raise awareness and position SLGI investment solutions.

  • Manage, lead and develop a direct report.
  • Engage in meaningful coaching, career development and employee wellness conversations with direct report(s)

    • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly and effectively resolve client concerns

  • Investment acumen:
    • Knowledge of investment products and services, and a strong understanding of the pension industry and fundamentals of capital markets
    • Ability to analyze/interpret/communicate complex investment principles and figures

  • Technology savvy:
    • Familiarity with investment and sales software applications such as eVestment, Salesforce, etc.

Education and Experience

  • University Degree or related education, accompanied by a minimum of 10 years’ experience with related accountabilities.
  • CFA and/or CFP and/or FSA/ASA designation seen as an asset
  • May require other licenses to sell into certain markets, as required by the industry

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
