Monday - Friday plus rotating call

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) commences to integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. The LPN assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. The LPN delivers and accurately documents direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. This role safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and /or interactions.

The LPN in the Licensed Practical Nurse OR role functions primarily in surgeries and invasive procedures for all age groups of patients for the perioperative and procedural areas; functions in other areas based on competency level within and outside the perioperative and procedural areas.

The LPN OR assists with and is responsible for the gathering the appropriate supplies for cases; having knowledge of and practices sterile technique; sets up sterile field; actively participates and ensures responsibilities for turnaround to occur in an acceptable and timely manner; having knowledge of instruments and equipment used; anticipates the needs of the sterile team; passes instruments to surgeons during surgery and invasive procedures; having knowledge of drugs used in surgery/invasive procedures; handles medications in a sterile environment, performs count procedures per policy during surgical and invasive procedures; manages sharps; knowledgeable in and able to perform reprocessing instruments and equipment.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Licensure (or eligible to sit for boards) as LPN in the Commonwealth of Virginia (in good standing with the Board of Nursing)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Licensure as LPN in the Commonwealth of Virginia (in good standing with the Board of Nursing)AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent

Experience REQUIRED: N/A

Experience PREFERRED:
Experience as a LPN in either an acute care setting or in an OR/ procedural area functioning in a scrub role or similar setting.

Education/training REQUIRED:  
Graduate from a Board of Nursing approved School of Practical Nursing

Independent action(s) required:
Functions under the direction of RN or independent practitioner in providing direct patient care, emotional support and problem-solving, all-in accordance with hospital, nursing, and unit policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols.
Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor: time/schedule changes, legal issues, directed care which deviates from the standard; and identification of educational resources to meet developmental needs.
Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications, blood, blood products, and related supplies.

Additional position requirements:
Licensed Practical Nurse work and take on-call responsibilities all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
Individual shift rotation, on-call rotation, and schedules will be established by the Director/Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator.
Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements and/or as needed.
Assignments include performing this role in all perioperative operating rooms, procedure rooms (SPU, Cardiac Cath room).
May be assigned in other units providing competency based nursing care or tasks.
