Surgical Technologist (operating room scrub technician) sets up sterile field, gathers supplies for surgical cases, based on knowledge of instruments and equipment to be used. Surgical Technologist (operating room scrub technician) may pass instruments to surgeons.

The Surgical Technologist (operating room scrub technician) performs count procedures per policy during surgical cases. This position functions under the direct supervision of an RN.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:

Registered by the State Board of Medicine and Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) or Certified Operating Room or Surgical Technician (CORST) certification.

Certification or Registration Requirement for Continued Employment:

Registration by the Virginia State Board of Medicine, Current AHA, BLS, HCP Certification Current CST; TS-C or CORST required

Experience REQUIRED: 
0-2 years experience as a surgical technologist 

Experience PREFERRED: 
Experience working in an acute care setting as a nursing assistant or aide, if no surgical technologist experience 

Education/training REQUIRED: 
High School Diploma or equivalent 
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program or military training program or Licensed Practical Nursing Program or Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program (RN Interns Only) 

Education/training PREFERRED: N/A 

Independent action(s) required: 
Functions under the direction of RN or independent practitioner in providing indirect patient care, emotional support and problem solving, all in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policies and procedures. 
Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor for time/schedule changes, legal issues, direct care which deviates from the standard and identification of educational resources to meet developmental needs. 
Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies. 

Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): N/A 

Additional position requirements: 
Surgical Technologists work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. 
Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with employee’s specific Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator. 
Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements or in the best interests of the work unit. 
Takes call for routine cases after completing probationary period.
